25 Years Ago Number 27 September 1987

My last '25 Years Ago' piece was two months late. I won't make that mistake again so on the last day of September 2012 I'll just be able to get Magonia 27, September 1987 in at the wire.

Our main article was Martin Kottmeyer's 'Break a Leg', which examined the pattern of UFO narratives, to discover the dramatic structures which shaped them. Martin comments: "The tip-off was all the chases. Chases are staple items in our fantasy lives. It is a formula element to most action-adventure television... the reliance on chase sequences is understandable: it is a quick, easy way of heightening tension... In ufology it is a simple matter of observation that chases are absurdly commonplace." He gives a list of saucer chase 'mayhem' that rivals any James Bond movie sequence.

Other aspects of the UFO story mirror dramatic and literary conventions, including the roles of the witnesses and the 'ufonauts' themselves, which in most cases conform to a limited group of pre-existing dramatic persona that even preceded the UFO era.

Peter Rogerson's 'And the dogs began to howl' looked at what he called the "off-campus" history of the haunted house. He notes that in his work as a local history librarian one of the most frequent enquiries he receives is someone wishing to check the history of their house, to see who may have died there, or what stood on the land previously. These are people who feel that their house is in some way haunted as a result of an event that has intruded into their home-space from the past

The historical event has made the space in which it has happened an "inappropriate location for the mundane activities of life", and any subsequent attempts to introduce "mundane activities" will be disrupted by the echoes of the event. Peter's argument is complex, and the article repays reading in full.

Arch-sceptic Steuart Campbell occasionally graced the pages of Magonia, and in this issue he sets out his argument that UFO reports are almost entirely the result of astronomic mirages. (This article is not currently online.) While it's certainly true that many reports can be explained in this way, he goes beyond this to state "Astronomical mirages can explain so may UFO reports, especially the most intractable ones that I can claim that the UFO problem is practically solved!" He asserts that cases such as Father Gill, Travis Walton, the Hills and Socorro are all based on astronomical mirages, and continues: "A scientific hypothesis has been found which explains UFO reports..."

Of course this is nonsense. There is no 'scientific hypothesis' which explains UFO reports because UFO reports do not represent one single class of phenomena, but there seems to be a need, by believers and skeptics alike, to produce such an all-encompassing hypothesis, whether it is the ETH, mirages, or plasma phenomena (a previous favourite of Steuart Campbell, after he dropped the demonic explanation. There is, of course, no single explanation of UFO cases because 'UFO cases' do not exist except as a sociological construct. And there you are, just in by the end of September - unless you're anywhere east of Central European Time of course!

The debate whether UFOs exist or not has been discussed for decades, and the simple answer has always been yes they do exist. If it's flying and is unidentifiable it's a UFO. The more complex question I suppose, is trying to ascertain what it is that is flying and unidentifiable. Over and over many of the reported UFOs have in fact been identified, creating the term IFO, (Identified Flying Object.) The bigger question however seems to be whether it is something terrestrial, developed or created on earth, by us or some other country, or is it from somewhere "out there", perhaps in our own galaxy, a distant galaxy or somewhere else in the universe.

For years we've heard from the "naysayers" that claim UFOs can't possibly be from "out there" because of the vast distances they'd have to travel, the propulsion systems they'd have to use, and the fact that our own military and government dispute their existence. Those type excuses have lingered on for years by many that always have the same excuse, and don't bother bringing anything new to the table. I basically believe that those type individuals are living in a box, thinking we humans know everything. The truth of the matter is the fact that if these unknown craft being seen are manned, their technology and knowledge would transcend ours by hundreds, maybe thousands of years, because we can't go out there yet. That egotistical attitude has prevailed for many years by many scientists, astronomers, debunkers, and others that always seem to have all the answers.

Fortunately for those of us seriously interested in the subject of Ufology, there is support for the existence of UFOs from many impressive sources, which I will share with you. As with all of my research however, there are some individuals that claim extraterrestrial UFOs do exist, but I have to question their claims based on their record, lack of scientific data, omission of references, etc. That list of individuals would include Bob Lazar of Area 51 fame, Phil Schneider about the Underground Dulce New Mexico base, Lt. Col. Phil Corso, with no references for his best selling book "The Day After Roswell", Tony Bragalia about Roswell, and several others. I am hopeful that in time new information will surface, which will allow me to retract my current views on those mentioned above.

Below are listed some quotes from individuals that I feel are from more credible sources. These sources also indicate that the possibility of UFOs being from "out there", and real, has been suggested for many years.

There are many more quotes available by notable individuals, making similar comments that not only are UFOs real, but that most believe the occupants operating those craft are likely from somewhere "out there", (wherever out there might be).

Listing these comments will not change the view of those against the possibility of other life forms existing in the universe, while for me as a UFO researcher, I have assurance that the search should continue. Granted it's an "up-hill" battle, but worth it if it proves we are not alone in the universe.

Monster Causes Alarm in Chinameca

MONCLOVA, Coahuila - Residents of Colonia Chinameca were gripped by a psychosis on Saturday night after two children reported seeing an

alleged monster of humanoid characteristics and four legs on Calle

Londres in that busy sector.

The children described the entity as a little man with smooth, grey skin and four legs or lower extremities. It was seen in an empty lot of

the street in question in the Chinameca district.

Omar Andres Armendariz and Jose Rolando Gallegos, both 13 and local residents, were terrified and spread the word of the "being" they had

just seen among other locals.

The mother of one of the youngsters, seeing the state of nerves that her child was in, called the police, requesting that whoever caused her

son to fall into such a state of terror be apprehended.

After receiving the report, law enforcement agents reported to the scene and searched everywhere for the strange little man, but could not

establish it whereabouts. However, this is not the first time that

strange things have been reported in this district, according to

residents.

MONCLOVA, Coahuila - Residents of Colonia Alamo had quite a fright yesterday upon seeing a large, grey-colored, four-legged creature

submerge into the waters of the Monclova River at the location known as

"El Charco Azul" (the blue pond)

Public Safety Personnel reported immediately to the scene to deal with the case, which represents the second sighting of an unknown being

with matching characteristics.

Officers of the Policia Preventiva ordered bathers out of the water at the location where the "grey monster" was seen entering the river.

According to reports provided by the police department, residents contacted the desk officer to report the strange animal sighting at 2:00

p.m.

It should be noted that on Saturday night, two minors were terrified by the sight of a strange being in Colonia Chinameca. They described it

as having the same characteristics.

In yesterday's report, residents of Colonia Alamo stated that what appeared to be a "strange animal" broke into a run and entered "El

Charco Azul", submerging itself without coming out again.

Several elements of the Municipal Police reached the site quickly and conversed with some locals, who concealed their personal information.

Four young men from Colonia del R'io - Jes'us, Rolando, Emmanuel and Edgar - were terror-stricken by the "little man" while fishing for king

prawns at the location.
