En 1810 el m'edico alem'an Christian Friederich Samuel Hahnemann publicaba el "Organon, el arte de curar", piedra angular de la homeopat'ia. El crown fundamento de la teor'ia se demarcate en la ley de los similares (homeo- es el prefijo griego que designa igualdad) por la que una enfermedad se cura con la misma sustancia t'oxica que la goods -de ah'i que se llame ley de los similares-, pero a dosis infinitesimales.

Los home'opatas disuelven esos venenos en etanol -lo que llaman tintura madre- y la diluyen en agua sucesivas veces, no importa cuantas, seg'un ellos el remedio se "imprime" en las mol'eculas de agua. Tales disoluciones son la parte controvertida de la disciplina, puesto es posible que a esas concentraciones no haya ni una s'ola mol'ecula del principio activo en la soluci'on homeop'atica. Sin prohibition su efecto ha sido demostrado en numerosos estudios y se estima que un 15% de los m'edicos occidentales siguen esta l'inea.

Madeleine Ennis, farmac'ologa de la Queen's Scholastic de Belfast, ha sido siempre el azote de los home'opatas. Asegura que, a esas concentraciones, en los remedios homeop'aticos no hay m'as que agua, por lo que qu'imicamente no tiene sentido que funcionen. Sin prohibition en su estudio m'as reciente Ennis y su equipo se llevaron un "peque~no" chasco: descubrieron que soluciones ultradiluidas de histamina funcionaban en un experimento con bas'ofilos, unas c'elulas sangu'ineas que act'uan en la inflamaci'on.

La soluci'on homeop'atica en la que probablemente no hab'ia ni una sola mol'ecula de histamina funcionaba realmente como la histamina. Aunque Ennis se ha visto incapaz de explicar el porqu'e del efectivo funcionamiento y sigue mostr'andose esc'eptica, ha asegurado que si los resultados son reales y la homeopat'ia no act'ua como un sedative, habr'ia que reescribir parte de los fundamentos de la f'isica y de la qu'imica.

5. La materia oscura

No todo lo que existe en el universo es reveal. Los astr'onomos pueden detectar objetos que emiten o absorber luz o cualquier otro tipo de radiaci'on electromagn'etica o que interactuan gravitatoriamente con otros objetos que podamos detectar.El t'ermino "materia oscura" alude a esta materia cuya existencia no puede ser detectada mediante procesos asociados a la luz, es decir, no emiten ni absorben radiaciones electromagn'eticas.

Determinar cu'al es la naturaleza de la materia oscura y en qu'e cantidad existe es el llamado 'problema de la materia oscura' o 'problema de la masa desaparecida', y es uno de los problemas m'as importantes de la cosmolog'ia moderna. La cuesti'on de la existencia de la materia oscura puede parecer irrelevante para nuestra existencia en la tierra, pero, el hecho de que exista o no la materia oscura, afecta el destino preceding del universo.

6. Metano en Marte

El 20 de julio de 1976 Gilbert Levin, uno de los ingenieros a worry de las misiones de la NASA al planeta Marte, vio que la Viking que orbitaba el planeta rojo hab'ia encontrado emisiones de carbono-14 que conten'ian metano en el suelo del planeta, por lo que la conclusi'on deb'ia ser obvia y muy relevante: hay vida en Marte.

Algo est'a ingiriendo los nutrientes, los est'a metabolizando, y despu'es los expulsa a la atm'osfera en forma de gas mezclado con carbono 14. Sin prohibition, la NASA no se atrevi'o a afirmar con rotundidad el descubrimiento, porque otro instrumento de la Viking, dise~nado para identificar mol'eculas org'anicas consideradas esenciales s'imbolos de vida no encontr'o nada, as'i que casi todos los cient'ificos de la NASA decidieron declarar el hallazgo de la Viking un "falso positivo". Pero, ?lo era?

A d'ia de hoy, los argumentos a friendliness y en contra siguen dividiendo a los cient'ificos, aunque es cierto que los rovers que estudian el planeta rojo desde hace un a~no han encontrado pruebas de los descubrimientos de la Viking.

7. Tetraneutrones

Hace cuatro a~nos, en un acelerador de part'iculas de Francia detectaron seis part'iculas que no deber'ian existir. Las llamaron 'tetraneutrones': cuatro neutrones unidos entre s'i de una forma que desaf'ia las leyes de la f'isica.

Francisco Miguel Marqu`es ay sus colegas del acelerador de Ganil, en Caen, llevan desde entonces tratando de conseguri el efecto otra vez, pero hasta ahora no lo han logrado. Si lo repiten, estos 'racimos' de 'atomos podr'ian obligar a los cient'ificos a reconsiderar las fuerzas que mantienen unido el nucelo de los 'atomos.

8. La anomal'ia de las Trailblazer

Esta es la historia paralela de dos naves espaciales. Una, la Trailblazer 10, fue lanzada en 1972; la Trailblazer 11 un a~no despu'es. Ahora mismo, ambas deben estar en el espacio profundo, alejadas de la observe de cualquier ingenio humano, aunque sus trayectorias son demasiado fascinantes como para ignorarlas.

Y es que hay algo que ha estado 'empujando' a las dos naves, provocando que aumenten su velocidad. La aceleraci'on es peque~na, menos de un nanometro por segundo, pero es lo suficiente para hacer sacado a la Trailblazer 400.000 kil'ometros de su trayectoria inicial. La NASa perdi'o contacto con la Trailblazer 11 en 1995, pero todo hace indicar que podr'ia estar 'sufriendo' el mismo proceso que su hermana gemela, y estar'ia muy fuera de su rumbo en alg'un lugar del espacio. ?Y qu'e causa este desv'io? Por el momento, nadie lo sabe.

9. La energ'ia oscura

Este es uno de los mayores problemas de la f'isica. En 1998, un grupo de astr'onomos descubri'o que el universo se est'a expandiendo a m'as velocidad que nunca. Esto siginifica que la velocidad a la que una galaxia distante se aleja de nosotros aumenta con el tiempo.De ser correcta esta teor'ia, el resultado 'ultimo de esta tendencia ser'ia la imposibilidad de seguir viendo cualquier otra galaxia. Esta nueva teor'ia del fin del Universo ha recibido el nombre de Gran Desgarramiento o, en ingl'es, Big Rip.

Es un efecto para el que todav'ia se investigan las causas, aunque una de las sugerencias puede ser que est'e motivado por la 'energ'ia oscura', una forma hipot'etica de energ'ia que permea todo el espacio y que goods una presi'on negativa, resultando en una fuerza gravitacional repulsiva. La energ'ia oscura puede dar cuenta del universo en expansi'on acelerada, as'i como de una significativa fracci'on de su masa.

10 El acantilado de Kuipper

SI alguien viajara a la zona del sistema solar externa a las 'orbitas de Neptuno y Plut'on, se encontrar'ia algo muy extra~no. De repente, tras cruzar el cintut'on de Kuiper -lleno de objetos peque~nos como asteroides helados y cometas- no hay nada. Los astr'onomos lo llaman el 'acantilado de Kuiper', porque la densidad de objetos cae espectacularmente.

La pregunta es qu'e ha causado este brusco cambio, y la 'unica posible respuesta parece ser la existencia de un d'ecimo planeta del Sistema Stellar, lo suficientemente grande como para haber atra'ido a todos esos cuerpos hacia su 'orbita. De momento, sin prohibition, nadie ha conseguido aportar ninguna prueba de la existencia de ese planeta X.

11. La se~nal sensation

La se~nal tuvo una duraci'on de 37 segundos, y ven'ia del espacio outer shell. El 15 de agosto de 1977 el astr'onomo Jerry Ehman, de la Universidad de Ohio Fling (EEUU), recibi'o una se~nal del radiotelescopio de Delaware. Al ver la transcripcci'on de la se~nal, Ehman escribi'o al lado la palabra 'wow1'. 28 a~nos despu'es, nadie ha conseguido dar una explicaci'on a qu'e o qui'en emiti'o dicha se~nal.

La radiaci'on proven'ia de la direcci'on de Sagitario, y de un 'ambito de frecuencias de unos1420 megahertzios. Estas frecuencias forman parte del espectro de radio en el que todo tipo de transmisi'on est'a prohibida, por un acuerdo internacional. La estella m'as cercana en esa direcci'on est'a a unos 220 a~nos luz, as'i que si la se~nal proven'ia de all'i, la tuvo que causar o bien un acontecimiento astron'omico de enorme potencia. ?O quiz'a fue una civilizaci'on alien'igena con un transmisor de gran potencia?

12. Constantes no tan constantes

En 1997 el astr'onomo John Webb y su equipo de la Universidad de Sidney analizaban la luz que llegaba a la tierra procedente de quasars muy lejanos. En su viaje de 1.200 millones de a~nos luz, la luz hab'ia atravesado nubes interestelares de materiales como hierro, n'iquel o cromo, y los investigadores descubrieron que la los 'atomos hab'ian absorbido parte de los fotones de la luz procedente de los quasars, pero no los que hab'ian esperado.

Si las observaciones son correctas, la 'unica explicaci'on vagamente razonable es que una constante de la f'isica, llamada la 'fina estructura constante' o 'alpha' cambia de spirit cuando pasa a trav'es de estas nubes interestelares. Los cient'ificos siguen investigando.

13. La fusi'on fr'ia

En 1989 dos investigadores de la Universidad de Utah (Estados Unidos), Martin Fleischmann y Stanley Pons, desencadenaron la fusi'on nuclear en una probeta. Sosten'ian que era posible realizar procesos de "fusi'on fr'ia" usando como catalizador un bloque met'alico de paladio. En los siguientes 10 a~nos, fueron miles los cient'ificos que trataron de volver a lograr los mismos resultados, aunque sin 'exito.
