Myself and two others were on our back patio at about 9:30PM central time, which faces north. As a pilot and living near the flight path for IAH I probably notice aircraft more than the layman. We first noticed two orange/yellow spears traveling east to west just above our visual tree line. They were followed by 30 or more seemingly equidistant from each other traveling the same direction and appeared to be considerably lower altitude than commercial air traffic we noticed during the event. The event lasted about twenty minutes. Yes they looked like Chinese lanterns but were traveling in two straight flight paths and in pairs as they traveled from east to west. I expected the sighting to be all over the news but cannot find any reference to the occurrence in any local media.
