One of those pivotal moments in my life came when I went to visit the the Mayan ruins at Palenque in Mexico. This particular architectural wonder is different from the other ruins in the Mayan Peninsula because the sarcophagus of K'inich Janaab' Pakal, an ancient king who reigned from about 615 to 683 A.D., was found in a hidden chamber deep inside the primary pyramid. Because a tomb was found hidden inside, this particular pyramid is more similar to those found in Egypt than it is to other ruins found throughout the remainder of Central America. Why did this particular group of Mayans follow a practice that was customary only on the other side of the world?
When I personally viewed the lid of the sarcophagus, I was also amazed. Like the author Erich von Daniken who wrote the book "Chariots of the Gods," I find myself believing that the carving on the lid looks like a man inside a space capsule. The man carved onto the lid is surrounded by what appears to be round dials and a variety of tubes. His hands seem to be manipulating some of the equipment in front of him. His left foot sits just below a pedal. He is sitting in a complicated chair and beneath the chair appears to be some type of engine with lines of exhaust emerging from the bottom. If I had not seen this sarcophagus lid for myself, I would never have believed it really existed.
While many archaeologists do not believe that this tomb carving indicates that King Pakal came from outer space, my own natural skepticism was certainly eroded when I saw the carving. As I gazed at it, it certainly looked like a 1960's era space capsule to me.
