NASA has been searching for alien planets for several years now. Learning about strange exoplanets such as enormous, hot "Jupiters" and "rogue planets" that actually cruise through space without a parent star certainly adds to the body of research concerning our universe. Yet what scientists are really interested in are the Earth-like planets that may hold the potential for life.

In order to detect these planets, researchers employ a variety of techniques, including gravitational microlensing. Microlensing actually measures the deflection of light from a distant star that passes through a planetary system en route to Earth--an effect that was first predicted by Einstein in 1936. This method allows scientists to detect planets that are roughly the size of Earth.

Yet the real powerhouse behind detecting planets was Kepler. The specially designed, three-foot diameter telescope, called a photometer or light meter, stared into space and collected substantial amounts of data. In total, Kepler confirmed 132 planets and spotted more than 2,700 potential ones, according to the Huffington Post.

Unfortunately for future research, though, Kepler has had a malfunction. The second of Kepler's four reaction wheels--devices that allow the observatory to maintain its position in space--has failed. This deprives Kepler of the ability to lock precisely onto its 150,000-plus target stars, according to Space.com. Needless to say, it's a huge blow for the planet-hunting mission.

Yet TESS may fill the void that Kepler has left behind. During its two-year survey, the observatory will monitor more than 500,000 stars for temporary drops in brightness caused by planetary transits. These transits are another method for detecting exoplanets and occur when an alien planet briefly passes by its star, creating a shadow effect. TESS will hopefully identify planets ranging from Earth-sized to massive, gas giants.

In order to aid TESS with its search for life, astrobiologists are now modeling super-Earth atmospheres, planets several times Earth's mass, for planets orbiting in the habitable zone of red stars. By examining these atmospheres, scientists should be able to determine which planets are most suitable for life, according to Discovery News.

While modeling the atmospheres of these super-Earths, the researchers found that, in general, things could get messy. Ultraviolet radiation from a red dwarf is anemic. Without UV radiation to break apart certain gasses, a red dwarf planet might have a higher concentration of biosignature gasses and a smoggy sky. This means that super-Earth atmospheres probably won't look like anything that we would recognize immediately as behind habitable--and also means that scientists will need to be careful when pouring over TESS's data.

Currently, TESS is gearing up to target stars that will be 30 to 100 times brighter than those observed by Kepler satellite, which means that planets will be far easier to characterize with follow-up observations. Whether TESS will find a planet that supports life, though, is something that will have to be seen.

We still don't know if Earth, as a planet that currently harbors life, is alone in the universe. But scientists are actively searching for clues about other potential habitable worlds outside our solar system.

Astronomers are presenting their latest findings at the American Astronomical Society annual conference in Long Beach, California, this week. The word on the cosmic street is that Earth-sized planets are relatively common and that hundreds of new planet candidates have been identified.

"We have begun to truly map the planets in our galaxy akin to the way that early explorers mapped the Earth," said Sara Seager, professor of planetary science and physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who works with data from the NASA Kepler mission, which aims to identify planets outside of Earth's solar system.

Scientists from the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Hawaii at Manoa have estimated that 17% of stars that are like our sun host planets with a diameter of one to two times that of Earth, which orbit close to these stars.

This is based on data from NASA's Kepler mission, which can only detect planets that have a much smaller orbital radius (about 25%) than Earth's. That means that 17% of sun-like stars in the galaxy would have a planet about the size of Earth, or slightly bigger, within the orbit of Mercury.

If we're talking about planets about the size of Earth or a little bigger - that are within Earth-like orbits - that could apply to as many as 50% of all stars in the galaxy, but that doesn't mean these planets could host life.

A planet with a diameter of two to three times that of Earth would generally resemble Uranus and Neptune, according to the scientists. These planets would have a rocky core, hydrogen and helium gases and maybe even water. Near to a star, a rocky planet could have oceans with depths of hundreds of miles.

The Kepler telescope takes repeated images of the constellation Cygnus - specifically, of 150,000 stars. Computer software analyzes those images by looking for dimming of the stars, which might indicate that a planet is passing in front of it during orbit. At least three transits must be observed to be considered the signal of a planet candidate.

"Based on the new Kepler results, it's just breathtaking to realize that some of our very nearest neighboring stars must have Earth-size planets," Seager said.

It is easier for Kepler to detect big planets because these planets make the star dim more than small planets during transit. For example, a Jupiter-sized planet makes a star dim by one part in 100, while a planet the size of Earth would only dim a star by one part in 10,000. Given these limitations, researchers estimate that Kepler misses about one in four Earth-sized planets.

And there's more news from Kepler this week: The mission has discovered 461 candidate planets. That means that they still need to be confirmed as planets, but there's a whole lot of them. In terms of potential targets for extraterrestrial life, four of these are less than twice the size of Earth and have orbits in the "habitable zone."

That's the term astronomers use to talk about the range of distance from a star in which liquid water could exist on a planet's surface.

The 461 planets come from observations that took place from May 2009 to March 2011. Researchers found an uptick in the number of smaller planet candidates and the stars that have more than one potential planet orbiting them.

Kepler's database of potential planets has increased 20% since February 2012, with a total of 2,740 planet candidates orbiting 2,036 stars.

Scientists must perform additional analyses to confirm that a planet exists. So far, from the Kepler data, there have been 105 planets confirmed.

It appears 43% of the potential planets identified by Kepler have neighbor planets, meaning many of them exist in multi-planet solar systems.

Keep in mind, I told you about this map that Betty Hill remembered seeing in the space ship that abducted her and her husband in the 1960s. At that time, scientist said that other planets outside our solar system did not exist. Now we find out that other planets around other stars do exist. Betty's map above looks like a map of trade routes to me.

I wonder when the governments of the world especially the United States will get around to telling us about other people on other worlds? The Russians and some former Canadian government officials have done so already. The Vatican is now saying after years of excommunicating people that it is OK to believe in UFOs and aliens. Of course that is impossible for any celestial object, because the earth is moving at that speed, so all celestial objects appear to move with it. The moon's apparent motion is 30 sec arc /min against the stars. Satellites move much faster. Nothing stands still. I now realized it was not Regulus. I took the light's altitude to confirm it was standing still. It was geo-stationary. It was hovering over the same point on earth between 200 miles and 3500 miles west of my location. I can demonstrate the math upon request, but won't here for brevity. This light was far from the positions possible for geo-stationary satellites which are far too dim to see anyway. I sighted it for twenty minutes. Then it simply disappeared. Switched off. Went dark. Nothing in the atmosphere could have behaved this way. Nothing in space could have remained stationary without controlled powered flight. Nothing manmade could maintain geo-position. We just don't have the power yet. It seems to me that since most people would have overlooked the significants of the unique properties of this light I observed, these events must be far more common that we imagine to make it probable enough for me to observe. The overall Dawn mission is managed by JPL with significant contributions by Germany. Dawn targets asteroid Vesta in 2011-2012 as the second largest mass in the asteroid belt and Ceres in 2015 as the largest mass in the asteroid belt by far currently classed as a dwarf planet."Vesta is a generally spherical asteroid about 530 km or 330 miles in diameter compared to the dwarf planet Ceres at 950 km or 590 miles and Vesta may one day be classed as a dwarf planet. The Dawn spacecraft went into orbit around Vesta on 7/16/2011 for planned one year exploration and then is planned to move on to Ceres by 2015. The yellow arrow points out an object impact or crash site on Vesta. It appears to me that most of this wide-angle scene on Vesta is hidden under a lot of wide spread smudge treatments. That sends up a red alert flag for me. Even so, we can still see some interesting evidence as follows.The above 2nd, 3d, and 4th images show increasingly closer and closer views of the impact/crash site. The fluffy surrounding terrain is in my opinion smudge image tampering coating just about everything. As a result and as you can see, it is hard to know just what we are looking at here? Is it a lighter color disk shaped object as it first appears in the more distant images or a smaller wedge shaped dark object pointed into the center of an already existing crater appearing more so in the closest 4th image view?Without being able to adequately examine the site or its immediate surroundings due to the smudge treatments, it is hard to tell. However, what the smudge can't entirely hide is that something has impacted this spot powerful enough to throw out a telltale radial pattern of ejecta into the surrounding terrain. It is at least interesting. On the other hand, the images below of different evidence taken from a separate image of the same asteroid Vesta is a even more interesting.The above 5th, 6th, and 7th images taken from image #PIA14705 again by the Dawn spacecraft of asteroid Vesta and again posted in the NASA Photojournal on 9/16/2011 offers increasingly closer views of what very much appears to be the skeletal remains of a winged aircraft on Vesta. Note that it has a bombed out look to it which may likely be due to many small meteor or asteroid debris impacts over time. Considering the poor condition of this object and if it is an aircraft, it can be speculated that it has been laying there for a very long time and may well be ancient.Note that the presence of backward swept wings suggest a fast design that is suitable for atmospheric flight and yet it is found here on the asteroid Vesta in space in the asteroid belt. In other words, this could be a truly ancient aircraft designed for use on some world like Earth with an atmosphere. Could this be an object seen here on Earth by ancient civilizations that influenced their artwork as below?The above 8th image demonstrate just two examples of some aircraft designs produced by ancient civilizations in Central and South America long before there should have been knowledge of flight, at least according to conventional thinking. Note the similarities in shapes in these smaller more personal vehicles but demonstrating apparent similar flight design and functions to the object on Vesta. Yes, this Vesta evidence is very suggestive of an aircraft.However, in all fairness, there is another consideration here. Go back up to the 5th, 6th and 7th images and especially the 7th image. Take note of what appears to be two glowing eyes in the darkness to the left of the object in question pointed out by a yellow arrow and a question mark. Note that little can be seen of anything surrounding these two glowing orbs. Are these eyes belonging to some immense organic living creature? Could there be a serious cooter hidden in these shadows? I draw you attention to this because I tried to lightened this area to take a better look at this and failed.Upon testing, it appears that this darkness around this object in question is not true shadow as it is meant to appear but an artificial coating that will not respond to lightening as would true shadow. That of course, once again with the Vesta imaging, suggests image tampering likely hiding something there. We can't know what that might be but my point is that this darkness application may also be accidentally confining and creating the shape of the aircraft out of the lighted terrain.In other words, the aircraft wing shapes may be an accidental byproduct of image tampering applied by an artificial intelligence super computer. The AI lacking human imagination and with its likely closer views not admitted to may know that this "object" was actually ground confined and shaped by its applications, would typically not be concerned with a byproduct shape it created in applying the darkness.Note how the front edge backward angle of the "wings" extends across the "shadow" darkness into the lighted terrain further away from the object on both sides. The terrain there tends to align up with the wing angle very well and this tends to confirm that the image tampering applications are helping to create this aircraft shape with the wings.Of course I could be wrong about this but it is all part of the visual evidence and everything must be taken into consideration. Sorry about that but at least you can perhaps see the complexity and how one must in fairness always try to remain objective. Further, researchers ignore image tampering factors at their peril. One thing is fairly certain and that is that the image tampering is not there just for the hell of it or to tease you and I. Something else we would visually recognize is being hidden from our view here way out on the asteroid Vesta.When one thinks about it, the obfuscation may itself support the speculation that this second object is indeed an ancient aircraft. Why? Because it could suggest that some other supporting evidence may have been hidden here. What ever is being hidden from us there may in part explain why someone spent so much money on the Dawn Mission to just visit some asteroid rocks out in space. Someone may have suspected to start with that there might be something to hide on this asteroid and was willing to spend a lot of our resources to examine it closer along with the probably more main and bigger target Ceres.
