We where stopped at a light on Cedar Hill Rd at the Hillside Ave intersection facing south.

It was sunny and not a cloud in the sky, when we all noticed a large orange ball of light appear in the sky, out of the ball of light a large rotating black metallic object appeared and tracked across the horizon and then stopped and hovered in front of us.

The object had three orange lights in the shape of a triangle on the bottom. After hovering for a few seconds the three orange lights expanded into one large orange ball of light and then vanished.

We don't think the object was triangular in shape, but sphere shaped on the bottom and hexagon shape on the top. The object seemed to be at the same height as the float planes that fly over Victoria. We believe it was around the size of a small house.

Sierra Nevada however, was left out, and they've decided to legally challenge NASA's decision, claiming that their solution, the "Dream Chaser", is at least as capable as the two other craft, not to mention 900 million cheaper than the "CST-100". When the vehicles were compared, they were judged on three factors; price, mission suitability and past performance. Due to NASA's tight budget, price was weighed twice as heavily as the other two factors. The SpaceX and Sierra Nevada vehicles were far cheaper than the Boeing solution, so for the "Dream Chaser" to be passed up, it must have performed very poorly in the two other categories. Of the three, the "Dream Chaser "is the only spaceplane (the other two being capsules). This could of course have weighed into the decision, but Sierra Nevada claims that their design keeps in the legacy of the space shuttle and indeed might be more versitile and adaptable than a capsule would be. Officially, the three vehicles were scored comparably on the mission suitability assessment. Further more, Sierra Nevada claims that their past record is at least on par with Boeing. Not having telephoned ahead, I had some doubts about being able to see the professor, but I had previously found that the best way to see a relatively inaccessible public figure was to show up in his outer office and to talk my way in.

Instead of a hard time at the Palomar reception office, I got a horse laugh from a passing staff member when I asked about Professor Adamski.

"The Professor," and he emphasized the title in a mocking manner, "lives half way down the mountain. You'll find him running a hot dog stand down there."

The receptionist gave me a more thorough and restrained explanation: No there was no Professor George Adamski at the Observatory; the man I was looking for could be found at Palomar Gardens, a restaurant on the slopes of the mountain which catered to the tourists who came to see the 200-inch telescope at the crest. Yes, Adamski had written a book about flying saucers and had claimed to take photographs of them.

I drove back down the mountain to Palomar Gardens and parked in the lot almost filled with cars. Inside I quickly spotted a gray-haired man who appeared to be in his sixties, seated at one of the tables. A crowd of thirty to forty people sat open-mouthed as he related his story.

Adamski did not claim to have any connection with Palomar Observatory. "I am a philosopher, teacher, student and saucer researcher," he told us. "For several years I have been an amateur astronomer, and have two small telescopes, one of them a 15-inch reflecter, and the other a six inch refractor."

Long interested in the possibility of life on other planets, Adamski had written a fictional book wherein interplanetary visitations took place. He had also conducted a school of Tibetan philosophy, known as The Royal Order of Tibet.

His real interest in flying saucers began, Adamski said, when two men from the Point Loma Navy Electronics Laboratory, near San Diego, visited him. These men, J. P. Masfield and G. L. Bloom assured him that flying saucers were probably interplanetary and that an Earth government was also developing such machines.

The purpose for their visit was to secure his cooperation in photographing the strange craft, on the assumption that his small telescopes could maneuver more easily than the large one at the Observatory. They planned to make a similar request to the Observatory Staff.

Thus, having been asked by the military, as Adamski put it, to cooperate with them, he purchased additional photographic equipment and began to watch the sky for the spacecraft.

"Night after night I stayed outdoors with my telescope aimed, camera attached. Some nights I thought I might freeze because of the cold winds. "Alice K. Wells, owner of Palomer Gardens, brought hot steaming coffee by the dozens of cups but this was very little comfort. Once I caught an extremely bad cold and was away from my task for weeks while recovering, but still I persisted."

Not being a photographer, Adamski had to master the art as he went along. Absolutely convinced of the saucer's reality after the sightings, he began to hope that the time would come when he could make a personal contact with some person from another world. Many times he wandered out onto the desert, feeling he had received telepathic messages from the saucers.

But it was not until November 20, 1952, that Adamski's wish became a reality.

He had met two Prescott, Arizona, couples, Mr. and Mrs. Bailey, and Dr. and Mrs. George Hunt Williamson. Since the couples were also interested in possible contacts with space people, they asked to be invited to come along the next time he made one of his desert trips. Accordingly, Adamski phoned Williamson on November 18 and arranged to meet the two couples near Desert Center, California, two days later. Adamski's secretary Lucy McGinnis, and Alice K. Wells, were invited to go along.

The seven people met on schedule and proceeded to a point on the highway about eleven miles from Desert Center. The Bailey's bought a movie camera, the Williamsons a still camera; Adamski took along his 6-inch telescope, binoculars, and a case containing his still camera and gadgets for attaching it to the telescope. He also had seven cut film holders and an inexpensive camera.

Williamson, who claimed to be an anthropologist, had even brought along plaster of Paris in case any ground markings needed to be preserved. Thus, the party was quite well prepared in case a meeting with a saucer or a space man should come about.

"The first unusual occurrence," Adamski told us, "was the sighting of a huge mother ship type of saucer, that's the dirigible-looking type, which appeared at a very high altitude and was seen by all our party. We had camped right next to the highway, and I'm sure this mother ship could have been seen by any passing motorist.

"But I had the feeling that this would not be the spot where we might make contact. I had Lucy drive me to a spot a half mile or so from the highway. I then aksed her to return and rejoin the others for the period of an hour, after which I would return if nothing had happened. I had a very strong feeling that this would be the day for a contact and that I should be alone."

He set up his telescope and related equipment, and within five minutes was rewarded by the sight of "a small scout ship type of saucer some distance from me. I took seven photos of this ship, though these did not turn out well for some reason.

"Right after this, I saw motion out of the corner of my eye, looked, and saw a man approaching me. Although this person looked very much like an ordinary man, he was dressed in a peculiar type of ski suit clothing and had long flowing hair."

"The beauty of his form surpassed anything I had ever seen. I felt like a little child in the presence of one with great wisdom and much love, and I became very humble within myself, for from him was radiating a feeling of infinite understanding and kindness with supreme humility."

"The meeting lasted about three quarters of an hour. During this time, by using gestures, I learned that the man was from the planet Venus and that his visit here on Earth was due in part to concern over our use of atomic weapons. To express the idea of atomic explosions, the Visitor said Boom! Boom! Unfortunately, he would not allow me to photograph him. I got the mental impression that perhaps many of these Venusians were already on Earth, mixing with Earth people, and that possibly some distinguishing feature in such a photograph might enable people to identify them more easily.

Toward the end of the interview, the Venusian made a point of calling Adamski's attention to his footprints in the sand. It developed that the soles of his shoes were inscribed with symbolic markings. After he returned to his scout ship and departed, Adamski rejoined the others and excitedly led them to the scene. Williamson, fully prepared for such an eventuality, made plaster casts of the footprints. Subsequently, many people had tried to interpret the strange symbols impressed by the shoes, but had failed to come up with anything definite.

In the couurse of his talk with Adamski, the Venusian asked permission to borrow one of Adamski's film packs, with the promise to return it to him shortly. About three weeks later a similar-or the same-scout ship flew over the vicinity of Palomar Gardens, and the pilot dropped the film pack out one of the portholes.

The film, upon development, revealed more strange symbols, similar to those in the footprints. Adamski had a number of language experts at work on the "writing," yet without results - though one of them pointed out that the symbols appeared similar to a language called Urdu, which had been reproduced in a strange book titled From India to the Planet Mars, in which a Frenchwoman claimed to have obtained messages from Mars while in the trance state.

The next month, December 13, however, Adamski succeeded in getting several good pictures of the scout ships - these were the ones displayed in the restaurant.

Adamski further strengthened his acocunt with a sworn statement made by the witnesses, a photostat of which he took from a brief case and passed around through our group.

"What I have told you and the others is absolutely true.. But who is it that asked in the poem, "What is truth?" I don't remember, I am not a literary man. You must not only take my truth, but you must discover the truth for yourself. In that manner, you will truly believe, as I do."

"George Adamski was the first person to come out publicly and talk about his contact. At that time we had not gone into space yet. It was all so fantastic that many persons became enthused with his story. Of course, there were the skeptics who poopooed it (and still do). Adamski was honored by the Pope and the Queen of the Netherlands (if I remember correctly).

THE UNEXPLAINED UFO CASES FROM THE PROJECT BLUE BOOK FILES

In January, 1974, I visited the U.S. Air Force Archives at Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, Ala., to review the files of Project Blue Book as the first step toward writing a book on the subject.

In a full week, I read all the "unexplained" cases in the original files and made extensive notes, including the names and other identifying information on all witnesses where given. The cooperation of the staff of the Archives was excellent, and no restrictions were placed on my work.

A few months later, the files were withdrawn from public view so they could be prepared for transfer to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. This process involved making a xerox copy of almost 30 file drawers of material, blacking out the names and other identifiers of all witnesses, and then microfilming the censored xerox copy. The microfilm has been available to the public at the National Archives since 1976. The original Project Blue Book files remain under lock and key at the Archives.

On almost every page of the 12,000+ case files, there are big black marks where information that could be used to cross-check Project Blue Book's controversial work has been censored.

This includes the names of witnesses to widely-publicized cases, and even names in newspaper clippings!

As it was perfectly legal for me to copy witness' names when I visited the Air Force Archives, those names can be found in this report of 585 (less 13 missing) unexplained cases. And since the Privacy Act, which motivated the Air Force to censor the files in the first place, does not apply to reporters or anyone else outside the Government, they can be used as the reader pleases.

Inasmuch as the book I planned to write has never progressed beyond the manuscript stage, I see no reason to keep this information under wraps any longer. Perhaps it will encourage others to re-investigate cases and make the results known.

"Unidentified" says a great deal...and it says almost nothing.

Probably the most controversial aspect of the entire Air Force investigation of UFOs was its handling of individual cases.

The means by.which one case was determined to be "identified" and another
"unidentified" has no doubt fueled more arguments about Project Blue Book than anything else it did.

For many years, Blue Book's most vocal opponents have insisted that the standards by which cases were allegedly explained were grossly unscientific.
Blue Book's goal, according to those who held it low esteem, was to attach some explanation to every case, regardless of logic or common sense. Examples of Blue Book saying a violently maneuvering disc was an aircraft, or of blaming a puzzling radar tracking on a supposedly malfunctioning radar set which it never bothered to check out, are numerous in the popular UFO literature.

And they are even more numerous in the files of Project Blue Book. The urgency with which Blue Book officials tagged answers onto cases without having done the proper investigation is obvious, though not proven. But if the Air Force was so eager to label cases "identified", despite the lack of supporting evidence, then those few cases which it labeled "unidentified" presumably withstood every attempt to apply every other kind of label. And so it may be that those cases are truly unidentifiable in familiar terms.

Indeed, the Air Force defines "unidentifiable" cases as those which
"apparently contain all pertinent data necessary to suggest a valid hypothesis concerning the lack of explanation of the report, but the description of the object or its motion cannot be correlated with any known object or
phenomenon."

To meet such criteria, a report must obviously come from a reputable source, and it must not bear any resemblance to airplanes, balloons, helicopters, spacecraft, birds, clouds, stars, planets, meteors, comets, electrical phenomena, or anything else known to frequent the air, the sky, or nearby space.

Unfortunately, the Air Force failed to stick to its own rules. Some of the
"unidentifiable" cases most certainly can be correlated with known objects or phenomena. But most of them cannot. Moreover, many of the so-called
"identified" cases cannot honestly be so correlated. But we are primarily concerned here with those cases which Project Blue Book openly admits it tried to explain and failed.

The amount of detail in these cases varies enormously. Some cases - frequently those which were well publicized at the time of the event - contain considerable information, while others are vague and seriously incomplete.
Project Blue Book generally placed the blame for such incompleteness on the witnesses, but it should take its own share of the responsibility. 'In thousands of cases, there is no completed questionnaire in the Project files, nor even any indication that one was sent to the witness. And in most of the instances where a questionnaire was filled out, it was never followed up to get more complete answers to questions which the witnesses failed to deal with properly. For much of the life of Project Blue Book and its predecessors, there was no satisfactory.questionnaire at all. And one of those used for a lengthy period was so badly organized that a witness should not be held to blame for giving incomplete answers.

Yet, despite all the roadblocks, many reports are sufficiently complete to tell a pretty clear story of a puzzling experience. With this data now available, anyone can look at Project Blue Book's "unidentified" UFO reports and make up his own mind.

July 3, 1947; Harborside, Maine. 2:30 p.m. EDT. Witness:

astronomer John Cole of South Brooksville, Me. Watched 10-15
seconds while ten very light objects, with two dark forms to
their left, moved like a swarm of bees to the northwest. A loud
roar was heard.

July 4, 1947; over Emmet, Idaho. 8:17 p.m. PDT. Witnesses:
United Air Lines Capt. E.J. Smith, First Officer Ralph Stevens,
Stewardess Marty Morrow. Watched for 12-15 minutes while four
objects with flat bottoms and rough tops moved at varying speeds,
with one high and to the right of the others.

July 6, 1947; Fairfield-Suisan Air Base, California. Daytime.
Witnesses: Army Air Forces Capt. and Mrs. James Burniston.
Watched for 1 minute while one object having no wings or tail
rolled from side-to-side three times and then flew away very fast
to the southeast.

July 8, 1947; Muroc Air Base, California. 9:30 a.m. PDT.
Witnesses: lst Lt. Joseph McHenry, T/Sgt Ruvolo, S/Sgt Nauman,
Miss Janette Scotte. Watched for an unstated length of time
while two disc-shaped or spherical objects--silver and apparently
metallic--flew a wide circular pattern, and then one of them
later flew a tighter circle.

July 9, 1947; Meridian, Idaho. 12:17 p.m. PDT. Witness: Idaho
statesman aviation editor and former (AAF) B-29 pilot Dave
Johnson. Watched for more than 10 seconds from an Idaho Air
National Guard AT-6 while a black disc, which stood out against
the clouds, made a half-roll and then a stair-step climb.

July 10, 1947; Harmon Field, Newfoundland, Canada. Between 3 and
5 p.m. local time. Witnesses: three ground crewmen, including
Mr. Leidy, for Pan American Airways. Watched briefly while one
translucent disc- or wheel-shaped object flew very fast, leaving
a dark blue trail and then ascended and cut a path through the
clouds.

July 29, 1947; Hamilton Air Base, California. 2:50 p.m. PDT.
Witnesses: Assistant Base Operations Officer Capt. William
Rhyerd, ex-AAF B-29 pilot Ward Stewart. Watched for unknown
length of time while two round, shiny, white objects with
estimated 15-25 foot diameters, flew 3-4 times the apparent speed
of a P-80, also in sight. One object flew straight and level;
the other weaved from side-to-side like an escort fighter.

Sept. 3, 1947; Oswego, Oregon. 12:15 p.m. PDT. Witness:

housewife Mrs. Raymond Dupui. Watched for unknown length of time
as 12-15 round, silver objects flew an unstated pattern.

Oct., 1947; Dodgeville, Wisconsin. 11
unnamed civilian man. Watched for 1 hour while an undescribed
object flew counterclockwise circles.

Oct. 14, 1947; 11 mi. NNE of Cave Creek, Arizona. Noon MDT.
Witnesses: ex-AAF fighter pilot J.L. Clark, civilian pilot
Anderson, third man. Watched 45-60 seconds while one 3-foot
"flying wing"-shaped object, which looked black against the white
clouds and red against the blue sky, flew straight at an
estimated 380 m.p.h., at 8-10,000 feet, from NW to SE.

April 5, 1948; Holloman AFB, New Mexico. Afternoon. Witnesses:
Geophysics Lab balloon observers Alsen, Johnson, Chance. Two
irregular, round, white or golden objects. One made three loops
then rose and disappeared rapidly; the other flew in a fast arc
to the west during the 3O^second sighting.

July 29, 1948: Indianapolis, Indiana. 9:88 a.m. witness*:

James Toney, Robert Huggins, both employees of a rug cleaning
firm. One shiny aluminum object, shaped something like an
airplane's propeller, with 10-12 small cups protruding from
either blade. Estimated size 6-8' long, 1.5-2' wide. The object
glided across the road a few hundred feet in front of their
vehicle and apparently went down in a wooded area. Sighting
lasted a few seconds.

July 31, 1948; Indianapolis, Indiana. 8:25 a.m. Witnesses: Mr.
and Mrs. Vernon Swigert; he was an electrician. Object was
shaped like a cymbal, or domed disc; about 20' across and 6-8'
thick, and was white without any shine. It flew straight and
level from horizon to horizon in about 10 seconds, shimmering in
the sun as if spinning.

July or August, 1948; vicinity of Marion, Virginia. Shortly
after sunset. Witness: Max Abbott, flying a Bellanca Cruisair
four-passenger private airplane. A single bright white light
accelerated and turned up a valley.

Sept. 23, 1948; San Pablo, California. 12 noon. Witnesses:
Sylvester Bentham and retired U.S. Army Col. Horace Eakins. Two
objects: one, a buff or grey rectangle with vertical lines; the
other a translucent "amoeba" with a dark spot near the center.
The arms of the "amoeba" undulated. Both objects travelled very
fast.

Oct. 15, 1948; Fusuoka, Japan. 11:05 p.m. Witnesses: pilot
Halter and radar operator Hemphill of a P-61 "Black Widow" night
fighter. Up to six objects tracked on radar, only one seen
visually. Dull or dark object shaped like a dirigible with a
flat bottom and clipped tail end. Six seen on radar separately
Pilot attempted to close on visual object, but it dove away fast.

Dec. 3, 1948; Fairfield-Suisan AFB, California. 8:15 p.m.
Witness: USAF Sgt., control tower operator. One round, white
light flew for 25 second
