A witness photographed a UFO above the San Diego, California suburb of Santee on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 7.

According to "10News", San Diego's ABC affiliate, witness Ellen Henry snapped multiple UFO photos of the object as it hovered over the historic, and allegedly haunted, Edgmoore Barn. And she is convinced that whatever she saw in the sky was extraterrestrial.

"News10" interviewed Henry, but "she did not want to show her face on camera because she said she was still spooked by what she captured." And she claims that her camera stopped working after she photographed the UFO.

The station reportedly contacted the nearby airport and the nearby Marine airbase, but neither had an explanation for the UFO. The station also checked with the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) and determined that only one UFO sighting in San Diego had been reported during May. "News10" points out that Edgemoore Barn sits beneath multiple flight paths.

The station provides very few details from the witness. The "News10" reporter states that the object was hovering over the barn, but it is unclear whether that is her description or Henry's description. Based on the pictures, the object appears to be in motion. Henry told "News10" she is certain the object was not a bug. With multiple flight paths above the barn, and with the unidentified object apparently in motion, a conventional aircraft is a possible identification. But it is always possible that Henry snapped photos of something extraterrestrial.

A positive identification of this UFO over Santee is unlikely unless more details are obtained from the witness.

Kepler Spacecraft Detects More Than 1 200 Possible Planets Orbiting Distant Suns

NASA's planet-hunting Kepler space telescope detected 1,235 possible extra-solar planets during its first four months of operation, astronomers announced Wednesday, including 68 approximately Earth-size worlds. Five of those are orbiting in the parent star's habitable "Goldilocks" zone where liquid water could exist in environments favorable for life.

The planetary "candidates" must be confirmed by additional observations and analysis and it will take another two years to collect enough data to determine how common Earth-like worlds might be. But based on the initial results, "Kepler's blown the lid off everything we know about extra-solar planets," said Debra Fischer, an astronomer at Yale University.

Launched from Cape Canaveral on March 6, 2009, Kepler's 95-megapixel camera is aimed at a patch of sky in the constellation Cygnus that's the size of an out-stretched hand, a 10-degree-wide target zone that contains more than 4.5 million detectable stars.

Of that total, some 300,000 are believed to be the right age, have the right composition and the proper brightness to host Earth-like planets. More than 156,000 of those, ranging from 600 to 3,000 light years away, will be actively monitored by Kepler over the life of the mission.

The spacecraft's camera works like a photometer, continually monitoring the brightness of target stars in the instrument's wide field of view, on the lookout for subtle changes that might indicate a planet passing between the star and the telescope. By studying those subtle changes in brightness -- comparable to watching a flea creep across a car's headlight at night -- and by timing repeated cycles, computers can identify potential extra-solar worlds even though the planets themselves cannot be seen.

But it's a challenging observation. For a planet like Earth passing in front of a star like the sun, the star's light would dim by just 84 parts per million, or less than 1/100th of 1 percent.

To make sure an observation indicates the presence of a real planet and not some other phenomena, measurements over multiple orbits are required. For Earth-like planets in habitable-zone orbits, a full three years will be needed to confirm an initial observation.

The data released this week covers the first four months of Kepler observations between May 12 and Sept. 17, 2009.

"We found 1,200 candidates in this single field of view," said William Borucki, the Kepler principal investigator. "Imagine that we had that field of view covering the sky. Kepler looks at a 400th of the sky. If we had 400 of these fields of view, we'd see 400 times that number of candidates. We would see 400,000 candidates.

"What that's telling you is the stars around us have a huge number of planets and candidates for us to look at. And if we find that Earths are common... in the habitable zones of stars, very likely that means life is common around these stars. Kepler is the first step in mankind's exploration of the surrounding galaxy to find life, and the extent of life, in our galaxy."

Before today's briefing, the Extrasolar Planets Encyclopaedia maintained by the Paris Observatory listed 519 planet candidates beyond Earth's solar system, including nine discovered earlier by Kepler. Last year, the Kepler team announced 700 planetary candidates. The Kepler total now stands at 1,235 candidates, with 15 confirmed planets.

The candidates unveiled this week include 68 Earth-size planets, 288 so-called "super" Earths, 662 Neptune-class worlds, 165 roughly the size of Jupiter and 19 bodies much larger than Jupiter. Fifty-four candidates orbit their parent stars in the habitable zone and 170 stars feature multiple planets.

Of the 54 candidate planets orbiting in their stars' habitable zones, five are roughly the size of Earth. But all of them orbit much closer to smaller, cooler stars than the sun. For Earth-like planets around sun-like stars, three years of data covering multiple orbits will be needed for confirmation.

"The fact that we've found so many planet candidates in such a tiny fraction of the sky suggests there are countless planets orbiting sun-like stars in our galaxy," Borucki said in a NASA statement. "We went from zero to 68 Earth-sized planet candidates and zero to 54 candidates in the habitable zone, some of which could have moons with liquid water."

On the lookout for double star systems that could result in false readings, Kepler also has identified 1,879 eclipsing binary stars.

In addition, the spacecraft found one star system -- Kepler 11 -- with six confirmed planets orbiting close to the parent sun. If transported to Earth's solar system, all six would fit inside the orbit of Venus.

"Kepler-11 is a remarkable system whose architecture and dynamics provide clues about its formation," Jack Lissauer, a planetary scientist and Kepler science team member, said in a NASA statement. "These six planets are mixtures of rock and gases, possibly including water. The rocky material accounts for most of the planets' mass, while the gas takes up most of their volume. By measuring the sizes and masses of the five inner planets, we determined they are among the lowest mass confirmed planets beyond our solar system."

All of the Kepler-11 planets are larger than Earth.

"This, of course, is an amazing era of discovery for astronomy, for exoplanets in particular," Fischer said. "There's no doubt that the search for planets is motivated by the search for life. Humans are interested in whether or not life evolves on other planets, we'd especially like to find communicating, technological life, and we look around our own solar system and we see that of all the planets, there's only one that's inhabited.

"Naturally, we think that finding another Earth-like planet is identifying a site that's at least friendly here for the evolution of life. The primary goal of the Kepler mission is to statistically assess the occurrence of these small terrestrial worlds."

Fisher said when Kepler launched, astronomers expected "planets would begin to roll out of the Kepler mission like an assembly line."

"The first year, we could expect to see Jovian-mass planets and after two or three years we'd see the Neptunes begin to roll out and then finally, the Earths. So I'm amazed to sit here today and see Kepler is actually reaching the milestone discoveries faster than I anticipated."

Most noticeably was 4 lights blinking/flashing from southwest to northwest with reasonable distance in between. After about 3-4 times blinking in sequence (1 2 3 4) three of the four objects began moving. 2 in the same direction heading north and 1 heading straight up going south east. The 2 objects which were a reasonable distance apart actually ended up catching up to each other with one object moving slower, then stationary, until they were close by and proceeded northward at the same speed till out of site. I would have thought the objects were planes or satellites but the sequenced blinking lights followed by the movement and partnered objects was nothing typical of usual satellites or planes/choppers. It almost appeared as if the objects were communicating or signalling. We felt very eerie at that point as it seemed too choreographed for any satellite or plane we have ever seen. This occurred 2 times throughout the whole night. Also throughout the night on multiple occasions (maybe 4-7 times) a single flash (shooting star like) was seen followed by a faint moving object of variable speeds typically moving across the horizon. A couple were witnessed directly overhead. followed by 2 objects moving from the flash as an origin point (Maybe a meteor breaking apart and splitting?)They were quick sightings as we would turn to look when our peripherals noticed a flash then we would look and see 1-2 objects moving from that point. It may have just been coincidence of a shooting star followed by satellites. Only once did I witness (I was the only one to witness this) a flash (1 second) followed by a slow moving object and as it passed behind the tree in front of me disappeared when I went to look for it on the other side. I kept telling myself they were shooting stars but traveled far too slow to be so. Satellites were a possibility but the flash of light was strange. I am not sure if you folks have debunked these kinds before but we regularly saw an object moving south to north on the horizon glowing/flashing a light (not plane like)but would flash for 2-3 seconds (it was as bright as a planet)....fade out but still watch faint object move on path for 10-20 seconds then flash again. It would follow path for 60% of my view then fade away unseen. I assumed it was a satellite or plane flashing light through its path but the brightness and appearance seemed unusual. There were 5 of us out there that night and we all witnessed and confirmed that we saw the same thing and that it wasn't peripheral vision playing tricks or tree swaying that caused lower stars to appear like they were flashing/blinking. It was easy to confirm what were Planes and what were satellites. What I mentioned above was what we witnessed that we could not figure out what it could possibly be. As Dawn Spacecraft Closes In On Ceres Things Start To Look Rough

NASA's Dawn spacecraft is in the home stretch of its journey to Ceres and has snapped the best images yet of the dwarf planet. Grainy as they are, the new views of the 590-mile-wide world are already turning up unexpected features on the surface. "What we expect at Ceres is to be surprised, so it's getting off to a good start," said deputy principal investigator Carol Raymond.

The images, taken 147,000 miles from Ceres on Jan. 25, are 30% higher-resolution than the images taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in 2003 and 2004. They measure 43 pixels wide, a significant improvement over Dawn's images from earlier this month, which were 27 pixels across.

The images show significant brightness and darkness variations over the surface - particularly a bright spot gleaming in the northern hemisphere and darker spots in the southern hemisphere. While the scientists were aware of those major spots, they weren't expecting to see quite so much texture on the surface, said Raymond, a geophysicist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Ceres is fairly warm by ice-world standards; temperatures generally range from 180 to 240 Kelvin (or minus-136 degrees Fahrenheit to minus-28 degrees Fahrenheit), Raymond said. Theoretically, the ice on Ceres' surface should start to flow as it warms up, smoothing out any bumps such as those from impact craters. But the brightness variations across the surface make it appear very rough, she said.

"This is just starting to illuminate the fact that Ceres is one of these unique bodies that has astrobiological potential... and it's just continued to become more intriguing as we've been marching inexorably closer," she added.

Ceres was not the first stop in Dawn's 3-billion-mile journey. The first was the protoplanet Vesta, which is vastly different from its fellow mega-asteroid, Ceres. Where Vesta is dry and lumpy, Ceres is icy and round, massive enough to have been pulled into a planet-like shape. Scientists want to find out why these two space-fossils from the early solar system ended up with such different geophysical life stories.

At least with Vesta, there were meteorites linked to the asteroid that planetary scientists can study, Raymond pointed out. For Ceres, there are no such space rocks found on Earth - so the researchers have somewhat less of an idea of what to expect.

"I am excited," Raymond said. "Just having had the wild ride at Vesta, I'm also just in awe of what's going to happen. It's going to be amazing."
