Astronomers announced Tuesday that depending on definitions, they have confirmed three or four more planets that are about the same size as Earth and are in the not-too-hot, not-too-cold "Goldilocks Zone" for liquid water to form.

These planets are likely to be rocky like Earth, and not gas giants or ice worlds. They get about the same heat from their star as we get from the sun, according to the latest results from NASA's planet hunting Kepler telescope.

But don't book your flights yet.

They may be close to Earth in size and likely temperature in the gargantuan scale of the universe, but they aren't quite close enough for comfort.

Consider two of the new planets, the nearest to Earth discovered to date. If they have atmospheres similar to Earth's - a big if - one would be a toasty 140 some degrees and the other would hover around zero, said study lead author Guillermo Torres, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Life conceivably could evolve and adapt to those temperatures, he said.

"These planets do exist; we didn't know that before," Torres said in a phone interview from Cambridge, Massachusetts. "What we're really looking for is signs of life eventually. We're not there yet. It will take many years but this is the first step."

Torres' team confirmed earlier discoveries and added new ones, bringing the total known number of planets that are no bigger than twice Earth's size and in the habitable temperature zone to eight or nine. But that's only from a short search of a small part of our galaxy, so Torres believes that Earth-like planets are common throughout the cosmos, though he cannot prove it yet.

Torres likes to include one planet that would bump the new findings from three to four, but Caldwell said that planet may or may not be habitable.

It doesn't matter much. "We do not need to talk about the one or two exoplanets that could be like Earth, we are finding so many," said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of Cornell University's Pale Blue Dot Institute. She wasn't part of the study.

Torres and Caldwell highlighted the two new planets that are closest in size to Earth. The closest, called Kepler 438-b, is only 12 percent larger than Earth and gets about 40 percent more energy from its star than we do from the sun, so it would probably be warmer, Torres said. It tightly circles a small cooler red star with its year lasting only 35 Earth days and the sun in its sky would be red, not yellow.

It may hot, but "there are bacteria on Earth that live very comfortably in those temperatures, no problem," Torres said.

The other, Kepler 442-b, is about 34 percent bigger than Earth but gets only two-thirds of the energy from its sun as we do, Torres said.

NASA also announced that its planet-hunter telescope confirmed its 1,000th planet outside the solar system, most quite unlike Earth and not in the habitable zone. Added to those discovered by other telescopes, astronomers have now discovered more than 1,800 planets that are outside the solar system.

Howdy, It's very strange that someone would ask me for evidence of my participation in this non-event when no one seems compeled to require Burroughs, Halt and whoever else to substantiate their fantastic storys.

In any case here is some information regarding that wonderful goat rope outside the RAF Woodbridge East Gate that December morning. I was a member of the 81st Security Police Squadron on "B" Flight Law Enforcement. If I remember correctly (and you must forgive me for some memory lapse as you must realize that at the time this was not a significant event, consequently it really hasn't been burned into my mind, obviously had I seen flying saucers, and little green men I doubt I would have any problems retaining the information) those of us working were having some fun as we actually were playing music over one of the Police Frequencies. It was very quiet and since it was the holiday season, not much was happening. Things were pretty laid back. In any case, we were playing Music on the Security Frequency and the Law Enforcement freq was being used in case someone had an emergency or actual work related transmission to make. After midnight, John Burroughs radioed the LE desk and reported he had seen strange lights in the outside the East Gate on RAF Woodbridge. I was actually on RAF Lakenheath hanging out at the Law Enforcement Desk at the time. Burroughs, who liked to draw attention to himself, often over-reacted to situations and was considered very unreliable, wanted to know if there were any reports of downed aircraft.

We called the Control Tower and I even called the local Constabulary (I can't remember the town the constabulary was in, but I do know it was outside of Ipswich and I think it used to be an air base during WWII, I believe the control tower was restored in the 80's)

In any case, after getting a negative reply from the British Cops, My flight chief asked me if I wanted to head out to Woodbridge to meet up with Burroughs and see what was up. I grabbed the back gate keys, and took the back way to RAF W/B. I met Burroughs at the East Gate of WB. We left our guns with the guy riding with Burroughs and drove to the end of the long access road. We left our vehicle and walked out there.

There was absolutely nothing in the woods. We could see lights in the distance and it appeared unusual as it was a sweeping light, (we did not know about the lighthouse on the coast at the time). We also saw some strange colored lights in the distance but were unable to determine what they were.

Eventually we found three depressions in the ground, about the diameter of a coffee can in a triangular pattern. However, there was no damage to trees or scorch marks, or any damage to any plant life in the area. We noted the location of the impressions and departed the area.

Burroughs and his partner went back to patroling RAF WB and I returned to RAF BW. I reported what I saw to my flight chief. In the morning several of us were asked if we would return to the area to point out the depressions to some folks who I believe were from environmental health. They did have some type of instrument for detecting radiation and I believe they did detect some measure of radiation, however I don't think it was a significant amount. During the trip to the woods, Lt Col Halt, the deputy base commander (who's radio call sign was "Stopper") showed up. He was intregued by the report.

Now you must understand that we had a very interesting relationship with Col Halt. You see he really enjoyed hanging out with the Law Enforcement troops. He found our job interesting and I think he had fun. He would routinely stop by the office on swing and midnight shifts on Friday and Saturday nights and ride with patrols. I would say he rode with me 10 or 12 times during my time at RAF BW. I considered him a very friendly, relaxed individual and very down to earth for an officer.

Halt essentially said he planned on coming out to the site in the evening and one way or another several of us said we'd keep him company. The guys I remember were John Burroughs, Adrian Bustamante, and me. I think another officer joined Halt, I believe it was Lt Bruce England, but I'm not absolutely certain and maybe two other guys (Possibly one named Pennington, just can't remember for sure) There was however, no army of USAF guys out in the woods.. No fleet of vehicles, no towed light rigs, just a half-dozen or so of us stomping around goofing off.

I brought a camera with me and I think Halt had a tape recorder. We were out there for hours and someone noticed some lights in the distance. While they often seemed to be very close in reality as we tried to approach them we discovered they were very far away. Now don't confuse what I just wrote. Little balls of light were not flying around us or getting closer and flying away. We initially thought the lights were closer than they actually were.

In the end I would say we were in the woods for 4 or 5 hours. The next morning we went home and "B" flight went on break (our three days off). Three days later we returned to work and made fun of Burroughs for screwing up our radio fun with his bogus UFO sighting.

There were no secret debriefings, no threats, no sudden assignments.

Nothing.

It was no big deal.

One of the things that is so amusing about this issue is that I didn't leave RAF Lakenheath for another 6 or 7 months. You know, after a few days, this entire issue was forgotten. It just was not an issue. When I departed England, I was sent to Grissom AFB Indiana. John Burroughs stated on some TV show in the states that after the incident he suddenly and unexpectedly received transfer orders to Korea, apparently to keep him quiet. Bullshit. John Burroughs departed right on time (we had two year assignments to England) and guess where he went: Yep, Grissom AFB Indiana. I had to spend another tour of duty with that idiot.

Ok, so now John and I are in Indiana together. We don't know anyone but each other, so we hung out for a few months until we got to know other people. Guess what. He never spoke of seeing a flying saucer, or encountering aliens. He never mentioned the incident again. Obviously something one wouldn't likely forget had he actually seen or encountered such phenomenons. Nope, John and I really never spoke of the UFO thing at WB because we didn't consider it to be anything except some unusual lights.

John and I spent two years together in Indiana. He later became a K-9 handler and eventually left the active AF for the guard or reserves and I think he ended up in Nevada. As in England, his tour in Indiana impressed no one. Burroughs was unreliable and very self-serving. He always tried to do what was best for "John."

The next time I heard of the UFO thing was when I returned to England in 1984. I had an assignment to RAF Lakenheath and two days after I arrived I saw a story on the news (on TV) about this book called "Sky Crash" about the alleged UFO Incident at RAF WB. I was absolutely amazed that anyone would have cared about this non-incident. I found a copy of the book and was absolutely blown away by the rubbish and inaccuracies which filled the pages.

Let me say categorically that there were no space ships, no flying saucers, no little green men, no encounters with aliens, nothing of the sort.

Sadly many UFO enthusiasts seem to have focused more on what they would sorely love to hear rather than what actually happened. Unfortunitaly John Burroughs and Col Halt seemed to have recognized that and took these "believers" for a ride. In any case, I seriously doubt that what I tell you will have any effect on the history of the incident.

Burroughs, Halt, Warren who ever he is, ( I have to admit I don't remember the name Larry Warren at all? Is he using a fabricated name to conceal his identity? If not I have to admit I honestly have no recollection of the guy. However, if we had shared a real UFO encounter I'm sure I would be able to recollect each second of the incident in excrutiating detail.) have only their collective hazy memories and conflicting accounts to rest on. Ask them why they never mentioned me? Ask them why they never talked about it after they left RAF BW? Ask them how much money they have made from articles, TV, and talk shows (or whatever schemes they were able to devise to take advantage of this incident.)

I could go on and on, but you know what, no one cares about reality.

Good thing they only took 20 minutes of the show, then. From there, they move to UFOs observed by British Police; there's an official unofficial police reporting site for UFOs in the UK. First up, a mysterious hovering light on a video. Despite tracking down the location of the video (though not going there on a map), the team decides they can't determine what it is -- though they're sure it's not a plane or astronomical object. Then they talk to a former officer who has a wild story about the UFO, but no proof there, either of the UFO or of time loss/abduction. After that, they hear of a UFO at Stonehenge in 1987 seen by many cops -- though only one is interviewed. The cop says the UFO made a sharp 90-degree turn which no plane could do. Other police refuse to come forward, but the one witness speculates the UFO seemed to be flying in a mapping pattern. (Though what that is or why the cop thinks it is not shared.) The team speculates that the UFO may have been homing in on the sacred geometry of Stonehenge; that's right, the monument is a UFO signpost. So, they build a replica of Stonehenge with acrylic and mirrors and shoot lasers around it. As one of the team points out, "This is all hypothetical." Well, at least this time they admit it. And yes, it is all as silly as it seems. Amazingly, they come back to the helicopter sighting at the end of the show. Almost as amazingly, the crew -- for once -- manages to re-create the sighting fairly convincingly by de-focusing the IR camera. But then the crew refuses to conclude that's what the film is. After all, it just couldn't be that, because the witnesses don't think it was. Evidence be damned; witness opinions are what counts. I remind my readers of Neil Degrasse Tyson's statement that "Eyewitness reports are the lowest form of evidence in science" and viewed as practically worthless. Too bad this team of UFO Hunters seems willfully ignorant of that.This would probably be a good time to mention one of my ongoing problems with this show: the recreations. Every week, we get a CGI recreation of the incidents described in the show. Trouble is, where the witnesses describe lights, we get spaceships a la George Lucas with beautiful surfaces and flashing lights. A triangle of lights? We get something like an Imperial Cruiser. A cigar shaped light? We get one with lights and windows and all sorts of things. And when the movement of a UFO is described, we get these amazing Star Wars exaggerated movements. One 90-degree turn? Make that dozens! the more the merrier. The point is, that the recreations "always "support the show's most outlandish theories and interpretations. Watching the recreations, you'd be hard pressed to reach any conclusion except that the sightings were caused by alien spaceships. And that's what the show wants; more true believers to drum up ratings and buy UFO Magazine.

1) RANCHERS (AND THEIR CHILDREN) 2) ARCHAEOLOGISTS (ON EXPEDITION) 3) GEOLOGISTS (ON OIL EXPLORATION) 4) SERVICEMEN FROM ROSWELL ARMY AIR FIELD AND /OR OTHER BASES (ASSIGNED TO DEBRIS FIELD CLEANUP)

THERE HAVE BEEN MANY "FALSE STARTS" WHEN IT COMES TO PURPORTED ROSWELL DEBRIS:

- IN 1996 ART BELL, A ONE-TIME PARANORMAL RADIO SHOW HOST, HAD RECEIVED AND REPORTED ON WHAT BECAME KNOWN AS "ART'S PARTS." TOUTED BY PEOPLE SUCH AS LINDA MOULTON HOWE, THE "PARTS" WERE SENT FROM AN ANONYMOUS SOURCE AND WERE SQUARE-LIKE METAL PIECES THAT TURNED OUT TO BE PRIMARILY ALUMINUM WITH TRACES OF OTHER METALS.

- ALSO IN 1996, A MAN PRESENTED A PIECE OF SHARD-LIKE METAL WITH AN UNUSUAL SWIRLING PATTERN TO THE INTERNATIONAL UFO MUSEUM AND RESEARCH CENTER IN ROSWELL. IT WAS LATER FOUND THAT THE FRAGMENT WAS ACTUALLY A PIECE DESIGNED BY A UTAH JEWELER AND MADE IN HIS STUDIO.

- IN 1997 DR. ROGER LIER AND DERELL SIMS HELD A PRESS CONFERENCE DURING THE ROSWELL 50THANNIVERSARY TO OFFER UP A BLUISH STONE-LIKE ARTIFACT THAT WAS GOING TO BE TESTED FOR ALIEN ORIGIN BY "UNIVERSITIES." NOTHING MORE SINCE.

- IN 2004 A NEW MEXICO GENTLEMAN NAMED CHUCK WADE FOUND SOME SEEMINGLY UNUSUAL METAL MATERIAL BURIED IN THE DESERT USING A METAL DETECTOR. WHILE THE MATERIAL DOES SEEM VERY HEAT RESISTANT (AND BY EYE IS NOT IMMEDIATELY IDENTIFIABLE) THE KIND OF TESTING REQUIRED BY A NAMED AND RECOGNIZED LABORATORY TO VALIDATE THE MATERIAL IS FOR NOW LACKING.

- IN 2011 NEW MEXICO SCHOOL TEACHER FRANK KIMBLER CLAIMED TO HAVE FOUND ET METAL FRAGMENTS IN THE DESERT. HE CLAIMED THE MATERIAL HAD "UNUSUAL" ISOTOPIC RATIOS. BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT SUCH ANOMALIES CANNOT BE DETERMINED WITHOUT USE OF EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE AND SOPHISTICATED ANALYZERS MADE ONLY BY THERMO ELECTRON INSTRUMENTS. THEY ARE USED TO EXAMINE THE ISOTOPIC RATIOS OF SUCH THINGS AS FALLEN METEORS. THEY ARE FOUND ONLY AT NASA, RELATED GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AND A VERY FEW UNIVERSITIES. IT IS NOT BELIEVED THAT THIS IS WHAT KIMBLER HAS DONE. THOUGH HE MAILED OFF SOME OF THE MATERIAL FOR SOME TYPE OF ANALYSIS, HE LATER CLAIMED THAT THE MATERIAL HAD MYSTERIOUSLY "DISAPPEARED" IN SHIPPING. TODAY, INTEREST AND DISCUSSION ABOUT HIS MATERIAL HAS WANED.

FOR ANY SUCH DEBRIS OR ENGINEERED MATERIAL TO BE DEEMED OF EXTRATERRESTRIAL ORIGIN WOULD REQUIRE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

1) THAT IT WAS COMPOSED OF AN ELEMENT THAT IS UNKNOWN TO EARTH OR SCIENCE2) THAT IT WAS COMPOSED OF KNOWN ELEMENTS BUT THAT OCCUR IN NON-TERRESTRIAL ISOTOPIC RATIO3) THAT THE PROCESSES REQUIRED TO ALLOY OR FORM THE MATERIAL ARE UNKNOWN TO SCIENCE 4) THAT THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES EXHIBITED BY THE MATERIAL ARE NOT FOUND IN TERRESTRIAL MATERIAL AND ARE UNKNOWN TO SCIENCE.

ALIEN REMAINS

THERE WOULD BE NOTHING MORE THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO DO (AND SKEPTICS WOULD LIKE US TO DO) THAN TO ROLL OUT A GURNEY CARRYING THE CORPSE OF ONE OF THE ALIENS FALLEN AT ROSWELL. EVEN A BONE PIECE OR TISSUE SAMPLE WOULD CERTAINLY SUFFICE.

A PICTURE IMAGE IN THE FORM OF PRINTS OR SLIDES OF AN OBJECT, PERSON OR SCENE THAT IS RELATED TO THE ROSWELL CRASH WOULD BE EYE-OPENING EVIDENCE. AND SUCH FILM COULD BE IN BLACK AND WHITE OR IN COLOR. A GENUINE IMAGE OF AN ALIEN CORPSE OR OF THE ROSWELL RETRIEVAL OPERATION IN THE DEBRIS FIELD WOULD BE A VERY CONVINCING ITEM.

PERHAPS OF ALL OF THE TYPES OF PHYSICAL EVIDENCE THAT MIGHT EXIST, THIS TYPE (UNTIL RECENT EFFORTS) HAS BEEN THE LEAST RESEARCHED. IT ALSO MAY BE THE ONE TO PROVE MOST FRUITFUL.

CAMERAS WERE NOT UNKNOWN TO COMMON FOLKS IN THE LATE 1940S, AND THAT INCLUDED RANCHERS. IF YOU WERE GOING TO GO OUT TO SEE A FALLEN FLYING SAUCER, YOU WOULD SURELY GRAB YOUR CAMERA IF YOU HAD ONE. AND PROFESSIONAL PEOPLE WHO MAY HAVE BEEN OUT IN THE DESERT AT THAT TIME (SUCH AS ARCHAEOLOGISTS OR GEOLOGISTS) WOULD BE EQUIPPED WITH A CAMERA TO DOCUMENT THEIR FINDS. OR PERHAPS A SERVICEMAN SURREPTITIOUSLY PHOTOGRAPHED SUCH FILM.

PERSONAL DOCUMENTS

PERSONAL DOCUMENTS SUCH AS A DIARY FROM JULY OF 1947 WITH ENTRIES RELATING TO THE ROSWELL CRASH COULD HAVE BEEN LEFT BY NEIGHBORING RANCHERS OR THEIR CHILDREN, BY INVOLVED SERVICEMEN OR THEIR FAMILIES OR BY MEMBERS OF INVOLVED CIVILIAN AGENCIES SUCH AS THE FIRE DEPARTMENT OR SHERIFF'S OFFICE.
