ASSAP CONFERENCE REVIEW SENT IN BY BRIAN RUSSELL.

The recent UFO conference organised by the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena (ASSAP) was billed as a summit on the future of UFOlogy. It was held at the University of Worcester on Saturday 17th November 2012.

The University of Worcester is a pleasant enough venue, although it was disappointing to find the event wasn't sign-posted when we arrived. Along with other delegates we made our way to the main building, which had a local archaeological conference in full swing with dozens of book stalls and food counters.

By contrast the ASSAP event was in the impressive-sounding conference centre, a 1960s brick out-building on campus. We arrived to things still being set up - a marked contrast to the archaeological conference.

Arriving early gave us time to find a seat and have a look at the one and only book stall.

THE SPEAKERS

Rev. Lionel Fanthorpe

Well, what can you say about Lionel? Everybody loves Lionel! Lionel kicked off the proceedings by opening the event in his usual enthusiastic style.

Ian Ridpath

The first real speaker of the day was well known astronomer and UFO sceptic Ian Ridpath. I know he is a sceptic, but I have to say that his was a very good talk. Very professional and very well presented, which made up for some of the holes in his arguments that all UFOs are mis-identifications of known astronomical or meteorological events.

Paul Vella

It's never good to start a lecture by saying that you don't know much about UFOs! His subject is bigfoot, so not sure what he was doing here! Still, he gave an interesting history of flying saucers and aliens in cinema and tried to show how these depictions (good and bad aliens) was influenced by politics. So, for example, during the Reagan years in the White House we should have seen films depicting 'bad' aliens. Unfortunately, as Paul admitted, quite the opposite was true! Oops!

LUNCH

Due to overrunning and late starting, lunch was 20 mins. Mad dash to student union (5 mins), wait a long time (5+ mins) to be served as none of the staff had prepared any food and even though there were three members of staff behind the counter we all had a very long wait! This left approx. 10 mins to eat your food (less if you dared to order anything hot)!

Sacha Christie

Interesting speaker. I had been looking forward to this speaker as I had read a little about her and was keen to find out more about her experiences. She was a good speaker though she appeared a little nervous and defensive. Unfortunately there was very little information given out about her family's abduction experience in 1997, which would have given more contextual narrative to her main argument: abductees are real people with real experiences; they are just as confused by these experiences as everyone else. Some interesting points about a multi-disciplinary approach to abductions.

Trystan Swale

Trystan is a nice chap. He is sceptical with a capital 'S', and probably with good reason. His talk was on crop circles, and the feel was that this was an easy topic for a sceptic to choose so they could make fun of it. Potential genuine paranormal experiences were quickly brushed over, leaving the audience members I spoke to feeling disappointed.

Kevin Goodman

Probably the best talk of the day. I always like to hear Kevin talk about Warminster. Balanced approach with interesting historical details and a nice video featuring Arthur Shuttlewood. Kevin always comes over as a genuine, down-to-earth guy trying to work out what his experiences at Warminster were all about. Although sceptical with a "small" 's' about some of what went on in Warminster, Kevin at least is open-minded about what could have happened in this small Wiltshire town.

Cal Cooper

Doing his PhD in parapsychology at Northampton Uni. makes Cal uniquely positioned to talk about 'UFOs and the Paranormal.' Very good speaker. His subject was 'UFOs and the Paranormal', except he didn't talk about this - instead he talked about his new book "Telephone calls from the Dead" (which he talked about at last year's ASSAP conference)! He threw in a couple of cases where people claimed to have had phone calls from aliens although missed the famous Arthur Shuttlewood case. The second speaker who started his talk with saying he knew very little about UFOs, and he pronounced UFOlogy wrongly throughout his talk!

John Wickham

To be honest, by this stage we had had enough and left early (nothing against John, who seemed like a very nice guy). John, from BUFORA, was standing in for Tony Eccles. Feedback I have heard from people I know say his talk was good but again, nothing new.

Lembit "Opik

Well, unfortunately Lembit couldn't make it. Known more for being a former MP and marrying a 'Cheeky Girl' than his UFOlogical research. But don't be too upset; if you must see Lembit speak on all things strange, he is at the ASSAP conference at Bath University next year - try and contain your excitement!

Overall, from comments I heard from other audience members, it was a very general conference covering the basics that a lot of people already knew. There was nothing very new presented at the event.

The event itself was well organised, though there were a few glitches, namely a P.A. system that didn't work properly all of the time, hand-dryers in the gents toilets that drowned out the speakers, and for quite a few of the audience, members of a certain West Midlands UFO group who insisted on whispering loudly and opening bags of sweets through every presentation!

So there you have it. A rather strange choice of speakers, some who openly admitted they knew very little about UFOlogy. Why ASSAP didn't go for speakers who actually knew something about the subject was a source of much puzzlement to everyone at the event! Conclusion: nice try, but could have done a lot better!

The being is clearly visible and you even see the trail in the sand behind him where he walked and he casts a shadow on the ground just in front of him. This is a valid image and you can clearly see the beings legs, torso, head and body. The image is available to anyone to examine and is very unexplainable. The image is the panoramic view from the Rocknest on Mars.

Okay, not really that kind of spirit, but we have good reasons to be cheerful as our favourite Ufo Guy is back with a very haunting story...

It's the story of Alexandra Holzer and, as she is the daughter of the famous ghost hunter Hanz Holzer, publishing it is definitely a great way to launch our "Paranormal" category.

Those of you who read the old version of 'Forward and Share' might remember some of Bill Knell's articles... They were great additions to our UFOs Related topic and were very popular among our readers ("Good news: We have managed to salvage some of them and will definitely publish them again in a near future") so being able to publish more articles from him is like an early Christmas present for us.

But, enough of my rambling: Bill Knell and his haunting story of Alexandra Holzer is only a few mouse scrolls away...

THE HAUNTING STORY OF ALEXANDRA HOLZER

"Bill Knell"

Alexandra Holzer had anything but a normal childhood. One of

two sisters, she is the youngest born to Ghost Hunter Hans

Holzer and Countess Catherine Buxhoeveden. She explained some of

the funny, offbeat and frightening moments of her youth in

"Growing Up Haunted: A Ghostly Memoir" (Schiffer Publishing Ltd.,

2008). To understand Alexandra, you really have to know a bit

about her parents, so we'll begin there.

Hans Holzer is generally considered to be the father of modern

spirit investigation. The author of over one hundred and

forty-five books and novels, Hans wrote Ghost Hunter in 1963 and

established the methodology that many within the field of

paranormal investigation use today. He received his Ph.D from

the London College of Applied Science and has made appearances

on popular television programs such as In Search Of and Murder

in Amityville.

Countess Catherine Buxhoeveden, also known as The Haunted

Countess, is a direct descendent of Catherine The Great of

Russia. Born at Castle Rovina in Merano, Italy, she grew up and

eventually married Hans Holzer. Catherine helped research many

of the topics for his books and added her own intuitive,

imaginative and inspired artwork to those projects. The Countess

lives on Long Island and often shows her art work in The

Hamptons.

After reading almost all of her father's books, I was thrilled

to speak with Alexandra over the phone. She instantly

communicates a sincere interest in spirit investigation.

However, it would be wrong to believe that she is just some chip

off the old block. Alexandra makes it clear that she and her

father do not see eye to eye on a number of issues. One of them

happens to be the subject of demons.

"My father doesn't believe in demons...he says spirits are beings

of light" she told me matter-of-factly. Hans is not alone in his

assessment of evil spirits, however, it does cut a swath across

research by others that do believe in them including Ed and

Lorraine Warren, well-known ghost hunters and authors in their

own right, and his own daughter. He also seems to find fault

with some of her conclusions as evidenced by a recent debate

over a photo she showed to him and her mother. Alexandra

describes the situation:

"After rediscovering my ability of sight and tapping into my

sixth sense, I began taking photo's around my home. The results

showed anomalies which I concluded were not manmade from the

environment of my home such as dirt, dust or in-door rain. I

became excited and had my mother take some of her own photos. I

explained to her that the objects were probably the physical

manifestations of spirit guides, family members that passed over

and so on. She was just as excited and in her low-key mellow

way, just as astonished to see what appeared on her bedroom

curtains and floors. Shapes taking form, an arm here, a leg

there... That began the topic of our orb conversations. Sounds

like a bucket of chicken: You get the wing, oh look here's the

breast!"

" I took it another step forward by taking some photos during a

function at my sisters house in Riverdale, New York. I wasn't

just interested in preserving family moments, but was searching

for evidence of life after life on film. What I believe to be a

face appeared in one of the photos. It was just behind my sister

and seemed to come out of her curio. After looking at the photo

a couple of times, she agreed that the anomaly was a face.

That's when the orb fight began."

"My mother, sister and I went to show the photo to my father.

Well, Mr. Ghost Hunter didn't exactly see eye to eye with us. He

emphatically stated, `That's not an orb! I can't see what it is,

BUT it's not a person!' That's all it took to start a ten minute

verbal battle over the photo and its contents. I said, `Look

there is the head,' and he'd reply, `That's not a head, it's the

light coming from the room!' I'd say, `It's shaping here like a

person,' he'd reply, `That's not a person, it's a bug of some

sort perhaps, but it's not a person!' We ended the argument by

agreeing to disagree, but I was still red-faced angry over the

whole thing and the argument was far from over as far as I was

concerned."

That's what is so terrific about Alexandra. She has a passion

that rivals her father's when it comes to spirit investigation.

That passion came through during own phone conversation and in

her description of her relationship, agreements, disagreements,

admirations and frustrations with her dad. She says, "Life with

my father is difficult, confusing and inspiring all rolled into

one." Alexandra continued:

"As a child, he was there for me to hold my hand crossing the

busy New York City streets. He was there to take me to the

pediatrician when I was sick, but always felt uncomfortable

sitting in the waiting room. He complained about the germs in

those places. Despite that eccentricity, he was entertaining and

very considerate of my likes and dislikes. He once made the

mistake of bringing me toast with orange marmalade when clearly,

strawberry was my favorite. I bellowed at him at the ripe old

age of seven and said, `Father, that's NOT the right jam!'

Laughing, he just smiled, left the room and returned with a new

batch of toast and strawberry jam."

"I long for those days and wish for more, but my father never

allowed me into the paranormal side of his life with the

exception of telling me stories from the past. As old age set

in, it was too late to get involved with that. The man I once

knew had become more difficult and less forthcoming of his

business. Today, all I can do is develop my own path and try to

carry on what little he'll let me until he passes. When he does,

I will be able to continue without walking on eggshells or being

fearful of insulting his ego. He'll be in a better place,

smiling again, and devising a plan to haunt me I am sure!"

I was nine years old when I became aware that my father's

military career and the friends he knew from those days provided

proof positive that Extraterrestrials were visiting our planet.

That awareness became the catalyst which launched my interest in

the paranormal. It caused me to read books on the subject

(including Ghost Hunter) and watch people like her dad on

television. I wondered when Alexandra first became aware that

her father was a famous Ghost Hunter? She provided the following

answer:

"I was around the age of nine or ten years old. It was

Christmas Time and my mother began wrapping up some of my

father's books as gifts for the school teachers. I attended prep

school in Manhattan, so the environment was quiet, proper and

subtle. One day before Christmas break, my class sat watching

our History teacher as he opened up his gifts. I hadn't a clue

what we got him, but was excited to watch him open the present.

I picked out the silver, shiny paper that apparently left

glitter all over any hands that touched it. As he looked at his

hands, I felt very bad and sunk into my chair. He laughed it off

and with a smirk continued to open the package."

"When the paper fell to the floor, a bunch of books appeared

and the look on his face went from a smirk to a serious grin.

`What could it be?' I wondered. `What the heck did mother buy

this poor man?' As the other kids and I crowded around him to

find out, the teacher showed us the covers of the books that

emerged from the wrapping. They were titles like `The Ghost

Hunter`, `"ESP and You", `"Witches"' and `The Lively Ghosts of

Ireland' by Dr. Hans Holzer! Oh no...that is MY father! I

couldn't believe it. He wrote those? What the heck does he do

for a living? I sank to the lowest point in my chair at that

moment. As if to add insult to injury, I fell off that chair to

the ground with a thunderous thud! It was at that moment that I

wondered if I should switch schools right away or maybe just

leave the planet!"

As a Paranormal Researcher with more years of experience than I

care to admit and children of my own, I can understand how

strange it must have been for Alexandra to face her father's

unusual claim to fame. My own kids always enjoy listening to my

radio and television interviews, but it can confuse them at

times. After all, I am not exactly dealing with conventional

topics. With that in mind, I wondered what Alexandra's earliest

memory of her father's ghost hunting might be? She told me:

"I was around the age of eleven when my father came bursting

into my room announcing he would be on television that evening.

He gave me the time, channel and show's name. I shrugged my

shoulders and said, "Yeah, okay whatever." But when the time

came for the show to air, I was not going to get off that

easily. He stormed back into my room and announced it was on. My

mother, sister and I (and the cat) went into the living room to

watch my father on television. He sat there smiling, commenting

and folding his arms. Although it seemed really funny at the

time, I can now understand his sense of accomplishment as I am

now trying to accomplish the same thing. I might have been bored

when I watched those shows, but I was also impressed and sensed

his fame."

My paranormal `awakening' occurred at the age of nine. I

wondered how and when Alexandra became interested in spirit

investigation. Now thirty seven years of age, she says that a

ghostly experience of her own at the age of thirty two was what

propelled her into the world her father had dominated for so

long:

"I was folding laundry and I heard my late aunt's whisper of a

voice in my ear. She passed from a rare form of Lymphoma two

years before. I had experiences as a child and never felt alone,

but this was something foreign to me that suddenly became

familiar. As I began to open up and allow her in, the dreams

came, then the messages and soon, I was able to read people

naturally. I didn't ask for this second sight or to be a medium

to help others. My aunt allowed me to get back to my roots and

chose the right time for me. I could have picked a better

moment, like before I had four children, but that is not how it

works."

Alexandra Holzer has partnered with Carly-Rose Singer and Shira

Etzionis to form a kind of Charlie's Angels threesome of east

coast ghost researchers called "New York's Pretty Paranormals".

Each one of them brings something to the table of spirit

investigations including Alexandra's vision of what Ghost

Hunting should be. "I want to help people," she tells me. I can

understand her vision and admire the fact that she and her

partners want to do more than just show up at someone's house

with a bunch of gadgets and an emotional detachment that is

unhealthy for all involved.

There is an honesty and sincerity that comes across when you

speak with the youngest daughter of Hans Holzer. She is

motivated, enthusiastic and with as many goals as she has

talents, she is so much more than just the daughter of a famous

Ghost Hunter. You'll be seeing a lot more of Alexandra Holzer.

She hopes to create and host a television show about the

paranormal and I cannot think of anyone better suited to do

that. She's also a prolific author with several books currently

available and more on the way.

I want to move onto a particular ETI contact scenario: UFO abductions. I would say this particular ETI race may think of us as a lab rat, a "pet" or a specimen of some scientific experiment. The previous NASA study was significant in that is recommends that we should protect information on our biology, and warns of some consequences should that happen. Probably the general public thinks the abduction reports are just a figment of the imagination or "sleep paralysis." That is not the case. Facts and evidence point to numerous ETI contacts being made. These have occurred on a worldwide scale, and yet, the government does not publicly admit to them - this fits into the government behavior pattern of non-disclosure. The reasons for non-disclosure were given in the previous blog post. In case after case, the government behavior pattern will tend to fall into one of the following categories:

1. A claim of no knowledge about this. This is because most publicly elected officials do not know. Knowledge is restricted to particular military and intelligence agencies.

2. A denial.

3. Discredit the witness. Spread disinformation. Create hoaxes. Falsify and distort the facts.

4. Media blackout, so the government does not have to respond. The first most well known abductee case was that of Betty and Barney Hill of 1961...again fitting a pattern of a more general contact during the years 1952-54. The problem with these cases is that very few of them leave direct physical evidence, the majority occurs with one individual, and the most bizarre part about it: the memory of the incident is erased and can only be recovered under hypnotherapy. There is a lot of research in this area. Researchers include Budd Hopkins, Dr. David Michael Jacobs, and the late Harvard psychiatrist John Mack (plus many others). Most scientists do not touch this area, and at the beginning, even those who researched UFOs completely avoided this topic. I thought this was an isolated incident but it is not: it is widespread, and it continues to happen at the present time. For loss of memory, consider how in human psychology, when humans suffer a traumatic event, the memory is blocked out as a defense mechanism. Not only that, but scientists are now beginning to learn how memory in the brain can erased and altered: see the article Scientists can implant false memories into mice. Abductees have often reported that their missing time has been covered up with a false memory.

As the memory of the ETI contact is in most (not all cases) erased, abductees tend to notice something is wrong when they are missing time. They may notice strange marks on their body: the most common unexplained mark on their body is a "scoop" mark as if a skin sample was taken. Moreover, there have been medical exams where an implant was discovered in the body with no entry point, and tests showed these would give off a radio signal. When the implant is removed, the radio signal would stop. But what doctors would notice is that the body tissue was not rejecting the foreign material, it bonded to it in a strange way: its as if the body tissue and ordinary rock together gave off a radio signal. In other words: humans are being tracked in the same way scientists tag and track animals in their studies. When I first heard about abductions, there was no physical evidence, but that is not the case any more. Dr. Roger Leir of California has removed a few of them. In one startling case, the item removed from the abductee was a meteorite sample! And this from an official report from Los Alamos laboratory which does nuclear weapon research. SO HOW DOES A METEORITE BECOME EMBEDDED IN AN ALLEGED UFO ABDUCTEE? See the following video, which discusses some of the physical evidence of abductee cases:

So the above covers the physical evidence, what about witnesses? Normally there are no witnesses to an event. There is one major exception: the abduction case of Travis Walton in Snowflake Arizona in 1975. There were seven witnesses to the event - Travis Walton went missing for about a week, there was a wide search, and local authorities began to suspect murder. Travis eventually woke up by a pay phone, and had no idea he had been gone that long:

The incident became so famous, it was made into a movie, Fire in the Sky. I do NOT recommend the movie, as the script writers altered the story of the abduction from the story in the book. Here is Travis Walton, who still speaks about the event over 30 years later:

* As Walton moved away from the disc, a beam of blue-green light came from the disc and struck him. He rose a foot into the air and shot back 10 feet while caught in the glow of the light. His right shoulder hit the earth, and his body sprawled limply over the ground.

* Thinking Walton was dead, the other six men sped off in fear in the truck away from the flying saucer. This is what I call a rare case of a "botched" abduction, which is what makes it unique. If they had stayed, they would have been taken as well and had their memory erased.

* When Walton awoke, he was in a white room on a table and thought he was in a hospital. That is, until he saw three alien greys around him. He jumped off the table getting ready for a fight, and the trio simply left him alone in the room.

* He stepped out of the room and walked into another that had a chair in it. When he sat in it, he activated a hologram of a planetarium showing stars. A similar planetarium is shown in the Disney movie Mission to Mars.

* Getting up from the chair he turned, and then saw a tall human figure wearing blue coveralls with a glassy helmet. The man's eyes were larger than normal, and a bright gold color.

* The man motioned for Walton to follow him. He was led down a ramp which exited a flying saucer. The area was similar to an aircraft hangar which contained other flying saucers.

* He then met two other men and a woman of similar appearance. They would not answer his questions but only smile. They brought him by the arm to a table, and before he knew it the woman put something over his face and he lost consciousness.

* When he awoke, he was just outside a gas station. He looked up and saw a craft shoot away in the sky.

And that's it. You would think that the government would do some kind of study, right? No. Instead they keep telling the public that they keep looking with their SETI program and have found nothing.

ALONG COMES MR. DISINFORMANT

So this event was known throughout all the media, and it is still discussed. It gained so much publicity that it was decided to make a movie out of it, Fire in the Sky. And now we have this interesting story from wikipedia:

During the early stages of publicity for the film, Walton was contacted by a man who claimed to have been hunting with his wife in the same area where Walton saw the UFO. The man reported that they had seen a disc that shot a beam of blue light, then flew off into the sky. As an active military intelligence officer, the man said he had reported the sighting to his superiors, who told him to keep quiet unless Walton's coworkers were actually charged with a crime related to the disappearance.

Walton judged the man's story plausible, and notified Tracy Torm'e, who had written the screenplay for "Fire in the Sky". Torm'e arranged for the man to undergo a polygraph administered by Cy Gilson, who had conducted the polygraphs on the logging crew nearly 20 years before.

Gilson asked the man two sets of questions: The first regarding the UFO sighting and the man's claims to being a military intelligence officer; the second concerning whether the man was colluding with anyone...in order to discredit Walton, and whether a military superior had indeed ordered the man to keep quiet about the UFO report. The man insisted his account was truthful.

Gilson decided that the man was lying about all his claims and, furthermore, that he deliberately tried to mislead Gilson and fool the polygraph. Walton speculated that if the man had passed Gilson's exam, his presumed associates would have stepped to the fore with evidence to discredit Gilson's polygraph methods and thus discredit the loggers who had early been deemed truthful following Gilson's exams.And this pattern of behavior, where some other person comes in to try and discredit these stories when the leak out to the press, happens again, and again, and again. It is constant. I would like to jump into more contactee reports - there are plenty - but they require a cautious look at the evidence. This is all in line with keeping the public in the dark. The reasons for it are explained in the government studies in the previous blog post.

So why would this be covered up? Because some abductees may have gone permanently missing. That is why I wanted to publish the study The NASA Study on Extraterrestrial Contacts first before I delve into this more deeply, because different ETI races can be benevolent, neutral or hostile.

UPDATE: WHAT IS THE MOTIVE?

I have been thinking about where this trail of evidence is going. It it going somewhere quite strange. Let us assume a large amount of people are being abducted for medical testing on a wide scale. What is the motive? I think we need to pay more attention to The Extraterrestrial Science of Dr.(?) Michael Wolf. In the mean time, I highly recommend the movie "Oblivion". It makes you think about a theoretical ETI contact scenario. Here is a trailer, I will not reveal any details about it. I remember when I was thinking about it, I encountered another person who had a dream describing the exact plot line, which had something to do with her mother. This person had not seen the movie.

Time Magazine Debunks China Ufos Ignores Obvious Questions
