New Bigfoot Thread On Jref Mormon Bigfoot Genesis Theory

The JREF (James Randi Educational Forum) has a new thread on Bigfoot; this one is titled "Mormon Bigfoot Genesis Theory." I stopped counting long ago how many Bigfoot threads there are on the JREF but at last estimation, it was around sixty. Sixty seperate threads on a "skeptic" site about a creature the majority of posters don't believe exists.

Interesting thread, on the Mormon folklore about Sasquatch. And, about UFOs. Not connected, according to the OP, and I'm not that familiar with Mormon doctrine. But it is an interesting juxtaposition.

Naturally, the skeptoids scoff at this; because it's Bigfoot, because it's religion. (The only valid point made by the OP is the potential racism inherent in this folklore -- kind of like David Icke's and other Illuminati loving theorists, who disguise their anti-Semitism with code phrases like reptilians, world bankers, etc.)

But in reading about Mormon founder Joseph Smith's experiences, it's clear he had contact with something that is very close to alien/UFO encounters. And in reading the book of Mormon, with different tribes stealing chests full of DNA, -- it reads like a sci fi novel. Parallels are clear, as Biblical/religious text UFO researchers know.

The Rivers Manitoba Ufo Case Of August 28 1967

A reporter asked me recently to describe the best UFO case that had ever occurred in Western Manitoba. And that made me rack my brain somewhat.

We've had many interesting and significant cases in South-Central Manitoba (e.g. Charlie Redstar around Carman) and around Winnipeg (e.g. the Charleswood "landing") and Eastern Manitoba (e.g. Falcon Lake) and Northern Manitoba (e.g. the Thompson "abduction" of Miss LeMarquands). But Westman?

The most curious Westman event that came to mind was the incident at Rivers, Manitoba, in 1967. It involved multiple witnesses, many of whom were military personnel, plus alleged physical effects and traces. Furthermore, it's a case that is rarely mentioned, yet has many elements of a classic of ufology.

The report, in the National Archives, notes that the incident occurred at 0645Z (12:45 am) on August 28, 1967. There were six witnesses, three of whom were military personnel: LAC J. Hebert, LAC K. Taylor and CPL A Fedun, all stationed at CFB Rivers, plus civilians Judy Ross, Leslie Dowdell and Jacqueline Dowdell, all of Rivers. Hebert and Ross were driving one mile east of Rivers, Taylor was 8 miles east, Fedun was in the town, and the Dowdells were at a different location in the town. In other words, we have six observers scattered across four different locations.

But that's not all. Two more military personnel, CPL K. McArthur and G. Stefanson, a Commissionaire, both at two additional different locations on the Rivers base, reported hearing an "explosion" that rattled windows and created "vibrations."

Here's the sequence of events:

* At 0530Z, the Dowdells "first saw [the] object through upstairs window, rising from [the] west. They went outside and observed [the] object proceed in an arc towards NE, becoming dimmed as it traveled. Object [was] described as very bright white with orange colouring in it. Object was round point of light without tail. Arc described as wavering with alternate dimming and brightening and appearance of stopping occasionally."
* At 0630Z, Fedun saw "a round ball of orange white flame with a reddish orange tail which was either very large or very low and which flared up at mid point of its arc. Flaming was clearly visible and very noticeably brightened sky. Direction of travel was SSW to NNE and passed NW of point of observation."
* At 0645Z, G. Stefanson, a Commissionaire, reported hearing a loud noise similar to what McArthur would report later.
* Also at 0645Z, Hebert "observed an ultra violet coloured light coming from directly above [the] car which remained stationary for 30-50 seconds and moved away before [the] light disappeared. It was accompanied by an increase in heat in [the] car." However, Ross only saw "a white flashing light, round in form. She feels it was stationary for a period but noticed no temperature change."
* At 0700Z, CPL K. McArthur reported hearing an "explosion" that rattled windows and created "vibrations."
* Finally, at 0710Z, Taylor saw "a red ball of flame trailed by a blue light or tail, at 3-4000 ft. altitude."

The first problem to deal with is the discrepancy with regard to the differing times of observation. Even if we assume the Dowdells' time of observation is an hour out, there's still the matter of reconciling 0630Z to 0710Z, at least half an hour. It's reasonable to assume that the military observers would be accurate in their times, so it seems possible there was more than one object seen. More on this later.

We also have some insight into the actual investigation of the case by military personnel. The Archives file notes:

LAC Heberts car detained at ME section. Body repairman states light dust on top of car is unlike any other in his experience. There is some bubbling of paint on top. This incident reported to TCHQ by base duty officer. TCHQ investigating team scheduled to arrive Rivers 1200 hours this date.

There are a number of things to note here. First, Hebert's report was taken seriously enough that they impounded his car as evidence. Second, the military vehicle repairman noted there was an odd dust on the car and bubbling of paint on the roof. Third, this was considered such a significant case that "TCHQ" - the RCAF Training Command Headquarters in Winnipeg sent a team to investigate. This team was the Canadian equivalent of the USAF Project Blue Book.

Who were they? Well, although this isn't part of text of the telexed report to DND, there are handwritten notes on the documents. The handwritten script reads:

Visited Rivers 28 AugIn other words, they were immediately dispatched to the scene. Since Rivers is about four hours' drive from Winnipeg, if they were to arrive by noon, they would have to have left Winnipeg no later than about 0800 hours, or within the hour that the sightings were reported to CFB Rivers. They had to have been roused in the wee hours of the morning, packed into a military transport and driven out.

This also says something about the team. To have been essentially at the ready, they would have to have been identified as a team and prepared for "action." Even arranging a transport at short notice is impressive in itself.

Of course, the makeup of the team and its readiness is not completely surprising. August 1967 was just three months after the Falcon Lake incident in Manitoba, only about 400 kilometres to the east of Rivers. It's sensible, then, that Squadron Leader Paul Bissky of CFB Winnipeg was part of the investigation team. Bissky was a devout skeptic; in an official document about the Falcon Lake case, he described how he attempted to get UFO witness Stefan Michalak drunk at the Falcon Lake hotel bar in order to break his story about being burned by a flying saucer. As for the other two team members, they don't seem to have popped up anywhere else.

An additional handwritten note on the page reads:

The report of the TCHQ team's investigation read:

TCHQ team conducted short investigation.at Rivers and found:

* A. No evidence of radiation on suspect car
* B. No magnetic field surrounding car which were unlike patterns of similar autos
* C. No blistered paint anywhere on car to indicate excessive heat application
* D. Dust on car appeared to be ordinary western Canadian dust and which more than likely was picked up while in the gravel pit and travelling to and from Rivers.
* E. LAC Hebert is not suffering any ill effects resulting from his encounter. He was to have a white blood cell count conducted and if any abnormality, to be reported. He complained of a severe headache to approximately 12 hours after allegedly sighting the brilliant ultra violet light
* F. Suspect sightings were of a falling meteorite which may have fallen in the Rivers vicinity. Have advised Prof. Leith office, U of Man, in accordance with CFAO71-1. Prof Leith away on vacation and will not be back for one week.

No further action contemplated on this case at this time.So the team drove out all the way to Rivers but did only a "short investigation." They did only a visual inspection of the dust on the car, without taking any samples for laboratory analyses. Their opinion outweighed that of the carpool jockey, who had certainly seen gravel dust before, as CFB Rivers was only a few miles from a gravel pit. And what had happened to the blistered paint?

But notice what they did test for: radiation and magnetism. Why? What protocols would have dictated such tests?

The answer might have something to do with both the Falcon Lake UFO case, which had taken place earlier that year. At the Falcon Lake site in Eastern Manitoba, higher-than-normal levels of radioactivity had indeed been detected at the site, so there was a precedent for expecting radiation. This also was the reference to the "white blood cell count," which was reportedly abnormal in the blood of the Falcon Lake UFO witness. But why check for a change in the magnetic field? Civilian UFO investigators had been claiming that such effects were common in cases where UFOs were said to have approached cars, but would this have necessarily been translated into operating protocol for military UFO investigations?

There is no record of Hebert being examined by the base physician. And isn't it odd that Hebert's companion, Miss Ross, was not similarly tested?

Regardless, Bissky and his team decided that the case was nothing more than a falling "meteorite" (NB - "meteor"). Ed Leith was a geologist at the University of Manitoba whose expertise included meteoritics, and he was the National Research Council of Canada representative in Winnipeg. Leith was known to be a skeptic and debunker of UFOs as well.

The meteor explanation is viable for the observations of the fireballs with tails passing from SW to the NE. The 30-second duration of the light above the car isn't compatible with meteors or bolides, although UFO witnesses' perception of duration has been suggested to be often in error. But Ross said the light seemed to have been stationary, too. It would have been useful to get more testimony from her as well, since her observation was somewhat different from that of her companion.

There was no evidence to suggest that the TCHQ UFO investigation team conducted anything more than a cursory investigation of the case. In fact, a memo dated "30 Aug" from Robertson to DSC Mr. Greenwood (a civilian?) noted:

1. Attached refers to UFO report from Rivers discussed W/c Robertson 29 Aug.

2. Cantraincom elected, on their own initiative, to conduct a fast investigation into subject UFO reports. Their report is attached.

3. Para H of subject UFO report would appear to be answered by investigation report.

4. Does it appear to be a fireball?The paragraph in question seems to have been about Hebert's car and the dust that was found and then not found.

So according to this memo, the TCHQ UFO investigation team chose to "on their own initiative," conduct a less than thorough investigation of the incident. They didn't interview witnesses in detail, didn't arrange testing of any samples from the car and didn't try to establish a definitive timeline of events.

Despite this, a handwritten summary of their conclusions was sent to Ottawa by E.W. Greenwood, DSC/DCOps. The document, dated 4 September 1967, read:

DOPS 4C

W/C Robertson1. Reference UFO Report Rivers, Man.

2. The actual sighting reports conform with the appearance of a fireball, and the two observations of "explosion" noises not only fit the fireball pattern, but suggest a good probability that some of the incoming material would reach the ground!

3. The only important confusion is the reported time - 5:30 to 7:10 AM. If the times are reliable, we have another coincident meteor or UFOs. Quite possibly the times are guesses - this might be checked.

4. Prof Leith can take up the fireball investigation.

According to this, the final document in the case file, the incident was solved as a fireball/bolide event, even though the observations did not completely fit the explanation. Robertson even acknowledges that the time differences might suggest that two objects were involved. Were there two brilliant meteors an hour apart? One fireball and something else? And was Hebert's estimate of duration of the event radically in error? And what, exactly, did he see? A brilliant, slow-moving object, or simply a bright flash that he assumed lingered because of a sudden shift in night vision adaptation?

And, if the meteor explanation was valid, what of the "explosion" that rattled windows? It is rare for witnesses to hear the sonic booms of fireballs, as most are high in the atmosphere, even those that explode or fragment. But meteor sounds have been acknowledged as real, electrophonic phenomena, though the theory of their production is "controversial." (See: http://www.pibburns.com/catastro/metsound.htm) Whether or not Leith investigated or tried to locate pieces of the meteorite through a ground search is not known.

Finally, a note about "disclosure." The official documents from the National Archives regarding the Canadian Forces UFO file on this case are available online through the relatively recent "release" of scanned documents now available online through the Canadian government. Some have said that the sudden availability of these files is an indication of worldwide government disclosure of UFO documents. The reality is that I had these documents already in my possession more than 30 years ago, when I simply requested a microfilm copy of the National Research Council files through my own local library, then painstakingly (and expensively) microcopied the relevant pages as hard copy printouts. They are faded now and hard to read, but they are the same documents.

The Rivers, Manitoba, case of August 28, 1967, gives some insight into how UFO reports were investigated by the Canadian military. It is especially noteworthy because it involves multiple witness, military witnesses, and alleged physical and physiological effects. It remains a curious case, although evidence suggests that at least some witnesses' observations were those of a bright, fragmenting fireball. It is too bad that it wasn't more thoroughly investigated.

Flying Saucers From Outer Space

In his second UFOlogy book, Flying Saucers from Outer Space (1953), Donald Keyhoe revealed: "Since July, 1952, in a new investigation of the saucers, I have been privileged to cooperate with the Air Force... Scores of impressive sighting reports by service pilots have been cleared for me, with the conclusions of Air Technical Intelligence-some so incredible they would have been ridiculed two or three years ago."

1952 was the year a veritable UFO 'sighting wave' occurred throughout the United States. Keyhoe explained that in August that year "the Air Force had changed its Sphinx-like attitude. In the last six months I'd seen the most baffling cases in the ATIC's secret files. At first I'd been suspicious of this sudden cooperation. But I thought I knew the reason now..."

Keyhoe described his visits to the Pentagon, where Air Force press specialist Albert M. Chop provided him with Air Technical Intelligence Center reports. On one occasion Keyhoe attended a screening of "the McLean film" of five glowing UFOs in the sky over Pascagoula, Mississippi. An appendix of the book listed 51 instances of "Air Technical Intelligence UFO sightings and other information secured and cleared for me by Mr. Albert M. Chop, Air Force Press Desk." The Air Force cooperation resulted with Keyhoe agreeing that he wouldn't use any Air Force case unless it was cleared.

Official statements of ridicule and denial along with intermittent disclosures that Kehoe thought correct about the mystifying aerial phenomena prompted him to observe, "It was small wonder that the American people were confused about the saucers."

After the last few months the reason for these contradictions was fairly clear. The situation had changed several times. Individual opinions had changed with it. Some officials had retracted earlier statements-or their words had been offset by still other officials.

A UFO sighting that attracted wide attention on July 12 occurred in the city of Indianapolis.

It was Saturday night, and the streets and parks were crowded. Suddenly a bright yellow glow appeared in the sky. As startled citizens stared upward, a huge, oval-shaped machine raced out of the southeast and over the city. Barely 5,000 feet high, it was seen by thousands of people as it streaked overhead, trailed by a fiery exhaust.

In two minutes police, airport, and newspaper switchboards were swamped with calls from frightened citizens. Thousands more hastily spread the news to neighbors who missed the saucer. For a while a panic seemed in the making. Then, when the saucer did not return, the hysteria gradually died down.

Keyhoe's perception of "mass hysteria" seems an exaggeration and perhaps suggests the influence of some of his sources of information. He reported that airline pilots confirmed the UFO they glimpsed during the Indianapolis sighting event was, as one pilot was quoted, "a controlled craft of some sort."

The numerous reports resulted in a "growing excitement" nationwide.

Some Defense officials, even a few Air Force officers who hadn't seen the evidence, believed most of the sightings were caused by the saucer hysteria. But the Intelligence officers knew better. Too many veteran pilots, both military and airline, were reporting identical discs, lights, and maneuvers. Many reports from the general public had also been confirmed, though with tension increasing it did not seem wise to admit it.

Kehoe continuously stressed that debunking was necessary to stop 'the rising tide of fear" yet he also realized that the policy of secrecy was a significant cause for apprehension as there was no evidence that the UFOs constituted any form of threat. Kehoe reported that Director of Intelligence General Samford was ordered to hold a press conference.

Since 1947, as General Samford knew, the Air Force had frequently tried to debunk the flying saucers. Each time it had been more difficult. How could it be done now, with any hope of success?

It was impossible to go back to the 1949 statement, which explained away "all" sightings. For the Air Force was now on record that many were still unsolved. The latest figure, given out by Captain Ruppelt, was 25 per cent; some Intelligence officers privately made it much higher.

Even admitting that 25 per cent were unsolved was misleading, for it evaded the basic facts. Actually, the Air Force reports showed nearly 500 genuine saucer sightings.

The press conference was held on July 29, 1952. Keyhoe reported: "By 4 o'clock the room was packed with top correspondents, wire-service men, and commentators. I hadn't seen a bigger turn-out since the A-bomb story broke." He commented about Samford, "His shrewd, pleasant face showed no hint of concern-it was not for nothing that he was Director of Air Force Intelligence... For the next hour or so they would be sitting on a powder keg. Two simple questions would light the fuse. All they could do was pray that nobody thought to ask them." The following is Kehoe's description of Samford's opening remarks.

"The Air Force feels a very definite obligation to identify and analyze things that happen in the air that may have in them menace to the United States and, because of that feeling of obligation and our pursuit of that interest, since 1947, we have an activity that was known one time as Project Saucer (press name for Project Sign) and now, as part of another more stable and integrated organization, have undertaken to analyze between a thousand and two thousand reports dealing with this area. And out of that mass of reports that we've received we've been able to take things which were originally unidentified and dispose of them to our satisfaction in terms of bulk where we came to the conclusion that these things were either friendly aircraft erroneously recognized or reported, hoaxes-quite a few of those-electronic and meteorological phenomena of one sort or another, light aberrations, and many other things.

"However, there have remained a percentage of the total, in the order of 20 per cent of the reports, that have come from credible observers of relatively incredible things. And because of those things not being possible for us to move along and associate with the kind of things that we've found can be associated with the bulk of these reports, we keep on being concerned about them.

"However, I'd like to say that the difficulty of disposing of these reports is largely based upon the lack of any standard measurement or any ability to measure these things which have been reported briefly by some, more elaborately by others, but with no measuring devices that can convert the thing or idea or the phenomenon into something that becomes manageable as material for the kind of analysis that we know.

"Our real interest in this project is not one of intellectual curiosity, but is in trying to establish and appraise the possibility of a menace to the United States. And we can say, as of now, that there has been no pattern that reveals anything remotely like purpose or remotely like consistency that we can in any way associate with any menace in the United States."

Kehoe noted, "After mentioning reports of strange aerial objects back in biblical times, Samford threw the conference open for questions." Questions about radar brought responses about flocks of ducks and temperature inversions. Samford's following commentary included:

"I think that the highest probability is that these are phenomena associated with the intellectual and scientific interests that we are on the road to learn more about, but that there is nothing in them that is associated with materials or vehicles or missiles that are directed against the United States."

"For many years, the field of spiritualism had these same things in which completely competent creditable observers reported incredible things. I don't mean to say this is that sort of thing, but it's an explanation of our inability to explain."

After reflecting about the press conference, Kehoe articulated his conclusions.

"We want you to emphasize the fact that our pilots aren't shooting at these things. We've been catching hell from all over the country." Chop showed me some telegrams and letters. "They even wire the President, 'In the name of God, don't shoot at the saucers.' So anything you can do-"

"Sure, I'll include that," I said.

The events chronicled by Kehoe make it obvious that Air Force complicity resulted with articles he wrote that were expressly based on the data provided to him. The advantages here for Air Force officials were not fully recognized by Kehoe, who showed consistent naivete about this aspect of his circumstances. The following is the quoted conversation after a paragraph of commentary from Major General Ramey was handed him.

"Anything else you want in the story?" I asked Chop.

"No," he said. "All we ask is for you to try to see the Air Force problem and give a fair picture." He paused, then went on in a casual tone, "If you think of any other angles, when you finish this piece, come on back in. We'll give you whatever we can."

Keyhoe estimated that the statements of General Samford at the press conference "had branded the saucers as phenomena with no mass"; however, the temperature inversion theory was contradicted by some reports and Keyhoe noticed other contradictory incidents.

It was a curious situation. The officers and civilian officials involved in UFO policy decisions were divided, roughly, into three main groups. The first, which I'll call Group A, believed that sighting reports should be made public to prepare the country for the final solution-whatever it proved to be. Most of the men in this group had seen all the evidence and were convinced the saucers were machines superior to any known aircraft. The other two groups believed in silence, but for different reasons. Those in the B group also had seen the evidence, believed the saucers were real, but feared the effect of a public admission. Group C was made up of hardheaded nonbelievers. Most of them had never troubled to examine the ATIC evidence; the few who had, flatly refused to believe it.

Since the first part of '52, Group A had urged that ATIC files be opened to the press. At first the two "silence" groups stubbornly resisted. But there was one argument that carried weight. The Soviet might suddenly claim that the saucers were Russian weapons. With the country ignorant of the facts, many Americans might believe the lie, increasing the chance of nation-wide stampedes if the Russians made a sneak attack.

Reluctantly the "silence" men gave ground. The first result had been the "Life" and "Look" articles, written with ATIC aid. Then the July crisis arose, forcing Intelligence to debunk the saucers. When the danger of a panic was over, Group A began to fight again, pointing to the July hysteria as proof for their case.

At this time, by sheer good luck, I had gone to the Pentagon and made my offer. Believing that I would give a fair picture of the Air Force problem, Intelligence had released the facts which wrecked the inversion story.

One source of information for Kehoe was the engineer in charge of the first Canadian flying saucer project, Wilbur B. Smith. Kehoe also found compelling a paragraph from "Life On Other Worlds" (1940) by H. Spencer Jones:

It is conceivable, for instance, that we could have beings, the cells of whose bodies contained silicon, instead of the carbon which is an essential constituent of our cells and of all other living cells on the Earth; and that, because of this essential difference between the constitution of these cells and the cells of which animal and plant life on the Earth are built up, they might be able to exist at temperatures so high that no terrestrial types of life could survive.

An Air Force propaganda campaign is chronicled in an incident that began when Chop presented Keyhoe with a script formulating a potential alien invasion of Earth on the condition that the article's author W.C. Odell's Air Force Intelligence connection and rank of colonel be concealed. The script was intended for magazine publication but "True" aviation editor John DuBarry responded: "Without Odell's rank, we'd be accused of printing a scare story..." I recognized the handwriting of a Defense official who knew I was writing a book. Like Al, he asked me not to blast the entire Air Force.

In his final conversation with Albert M. Chop chronicled in the book, Keyhoe was given a carbon of letter that constituted "our official answer to a letter from your book publishers." The letter stated:

"THE BACK COVER JACKET OF FLYING SAUCERS FROM OUTER SPACE "FEATURED CHOP'S LETTER. A BRIEF BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE OF CHOP MAY BE READ AT NICAP.ORG.

The letter was a culminating event of Albert M. Chop's Pentagon job as he resigned his Air Force Press Desk position, having explained to Kehoe: "This hasn't anything to do with the saucers... I'm going out to California-I've been wanting to get into private industry."

It has been six decades since "Flying Saucers from Outer Space" was published. My husband and I just finished working on our land and was sitting on our houseboat in front yard resting. My husband came inside and stared research online. I stayed out until 1am with our telescope hoping to see it again while waiting to see the asteroid. I believe that object is nothing from our world, I think it may be from the heavenly realms.

Also on August 8, 2008 in the same general area, Uncha Lake South Of Burns Lake, British Columbia a number of eyewitnesses watched a large platform with two circle objects attached to it floating/drifting across the evening sky and finally disappearing over a local mountain. This craft?UFO was estimated to be 200 to 500 feet in length.I should also add the Okanagan in British Columbia is again proving to be a Canadian hotspot for reported sighting. In particular Vernon, B.C. has been a very active area.Other amazing cases came in from Ontario and other provinces as well. I would also like to note, the 289 reported sightings came into just *HBCC UFO Research* and *UFOINFO*. There are many other UFO organizations across Canada and in the United States that are receiving Canadian UFO cases. So the total will be much greater for each of the Canadian provinces by the end of the year. I couldn't even guess how many UFO reports were reported from the United States and other areas of the world. Most sightings do come into us from the United States and we are very happy to receive them, actually some of the best cases are coming from the U.S. and go back numerous years.
