We humans are sitting on massive piles of data. It's estimated that we created 1.8 Zettabytes of data in 2011. The amount of data created has been doubling every two years. Where does it all go? Storage, for the most part. There is a burgeoning industry in mining and making use of that data. It can inform the management of a company about trends and future activity.Some of that data is probably junk, but by analyzing data you can do more than just tell you what has occurred in the past. Lockheed Martin analyzed Twitter and Facebook posting activity to predict large public protests in Saudi Arabia.Just imagine the massive amounts of data being generated on Facebook alone. You can bet that Mark Zuckerberg is thinking about it. It's probably the future for Facebook. Imagine being able to tell businesses not only what people want to buy now, but using predictive analysis to also tell businesses what consumers are likely to want six months or a year from now? Such information would be incredibly valuable and Zuckerberg is sucking it into his servers each and every minute.This isn't an anti-Facebook post. I believe that social media is an important part of the future of human communication. I think to a certain extent social media also means that we must accept transparency of all sorts- and that includes access to the information generated. Just because a company is using it to sell more soft drinks doesn't mean it can't also be used to predict health problems or track disease. It's a matter of who has access to that data. Does it simply go to the highest bidder? Could it be used by nonprofits and researchers?My primary question is this- if we are just beginning to understand the power of data for predicting the future, what might advanced extraterrestrials be able to do with our data? I'm not suggesting a conspiracy here folks- I don't think that aliens are busy data mining. But if they did have the ability to plug into our Internet, and creatively bypass security, they might have the ability to see all sorts of things not readily apparent to us. If you were a visiting extraterrestrial that might be very tempting. Not only could you research human history, but also take a look at where humanity might be headed. Could a Euro crash bring down the world economy? What impact will global warming have on our weather patterns? We keep a lot of data around concerning many different things. Data mining could tell extraterrestrials a lot about us. What would they do with such information? Well, if they had bad intentions they could use it to manipulate us, either behind the scenes or in an outright gesture. If they had good intentions they could use it to warn us of impending problems. Or they could do a little bit of both. That's the tough thing when speculating about aliens- any answer could be correct. How would we feel about data mining by extraterrestrials? I would imagine after the initial shock we would be pissed-off, and rightfully so. Data mining by extraterrestrials would be a breach of our right to self-determination. Interference in our society would be unacceptable, even if for our own benefit. So, if aliens were digging around in our data, what could they do to make it right? Perhaps the only hope would be complete transparency and a pledge of noninterference. They could tell us exactly what they did and why they did it. I think this would apply to any actions extraterrestrials may have taken to research humans and the planet Earth.This may sound a bit crazy right now. But interference is a serious issue should we ever experience Direct First Contact. In the meantime, I'm sure humans will find new and interesting ways to make use of all of that data. I called him over to the same spot in between the cedars, and asked him-"What do you think of that?!" His reply was-"They're here!" We watched it for 5 or so minutes just floating there. Couldn't tell how large it was(Because it was so huge and not knowing how far away it was.)Went to get the camera and remembered-the battery's dead. Didn't charge it because I had no way of predicting it would return a second night. Someone else had to see this. Noone's talking or they never look up.Or just plain afraid. The sighting occurred over my southern facing home in southwest Fort Worth near Benbrook Lake in the early morning hours at 7:45 AM Central Standard Time on December 10, 2010 (I confirmed the date and time by reviewing my text message to a friend with whom I shared the experience). I am accustomed to seeing aircraft which originate from or travel toward Carswell, AFB; however, this craft was on a trajectory outside of the usual flight paths I've witnessed. The shape of the craft was distinguishable as a dark silhouette against the background of the early morning sky, and the 3 equally proportioned lights were the dominant feature. At a higher altitude, there was a military fighter aircraft too small to identify, but was still audible. I watched for about 2 minutes, as the craft grew closer and eventually passed directly overhead. I looked to my left and saw a neighbor in in car about 3 houses down; however, this person was not a co-witness. I remained in place and continued to watch. In the time I looked left again, toward my neighbor's moving car, the craft disappeared in a blink. My initial thought was that in a clear blue sky, I should be able to reacquire the craft, as there was no way a conventional aircraft could have disappeared so suddenly. The sky was cloudless, my view was unobstructed. I then decided to see if it would "follow" us and drove back up the street and it did indeed stay in close proximity to the car. We parked in the church parking lot and got out. It was not threatening in anyway, just odd. The two guys in the truck drove back by, saw us still looking and pulled into the parking lot. The four of us could not determine what it was. It did somewhat resemble a balloon so one of the guys tried to locate where a string was that would be tethering the object and was unsuccessful. Meanwhile my sister called her boyfriend and he showed up. He too was baffled as to what this floating/hovering object could be. The two guys in the truck left and my sister, her boyfriend and I just watched. It seemed to be looking at us with the lights. The lights moved as if it were thinking or computing. I'm not sure of the correct word... It had intelligence. By the time we left it was 4:00am and the object never went out of sight. We left it, it didn't disappear. I was inspired to go into my DVD collection this weekend and pull out my copy of "The Legend of Boggy Creek" after I had watched the "Monster Quest" episode on the "Fouke Monster" or "The Swamp Stalker of Boggy Creek" as it was referred to on the program, earlier in the week.

Monster Quest showed several scenes from Charles B. Pierce's movie during the episode, so I dusted off my copy a put it the DVD player for the family to enjoy. I always thought of the film a great scary movie, but after I went and did some research about it, I gained even more respect for Pierce and the movie he created.

In 1972 Charles Pierce, an ad salesman from Texarkana, borrowed 160,000 from a friend who owned a car dealership, to make a movie about a local legend in Arkansas, that he had heard about growing up. Armed with a hand-held camera, and the local residents, who played themselves, Pierce set out to create a pseudo-documentary about recent encounters with a Bigfoot-like creature in and around the small town of Fouke.

Amazingly enough, Pierce, with no experience at making movies, was able to create a very believable and scary movie. His amateur actors, who obviously drew inspiration from their real-life encounters, display such fear, that the viewer really gets taken in by their raw emotion.

The movie starts out, documentary style, explaining the history of the town of Fouke, and its past run-ins with the monster.

There are several scenes that show the swamps around Boggy Creek. This really works well in setting the mood for the film, because the area is truly creepy looking. In fact I would dare anyone to find a scarier looking area in the United States.

As the film proceeds there are several reenactments of past encounters with the Bigfoot-like "Fouke Monster." Most of these are fairly benign, chance sightings by hunters mixed an occasional animal attack. Despite looking for a meal the monster stays hidden and avoids any human contact.

For the most part, the monster doesn't do anything to menace anyone.....well....that is until a young boy shoots it a couple of times. That's when the creature starts to view the residents of Fouke as adversaries.

Hunting parties are organized to try and kill the creature, but all they do is drive the beast away from the area for eight years.

It is at this point the Pierce makes his only error in producing the film. Two of the most awful country songs ever composed are added to stretch the length of the film. One is a ballad about how, "lonely", the monster is, and the second is about a local boy who likes to go camping and fishing in the swamp. These tunes sound like John Denver at his worst. I strongly recommend hitting "fast-forward" at this point.

Don't worry the film gets better after that.

When the monster returns, he returns with a vengeance. Animals once again begin to disappear and people begin to be attacked. It is obvious that the monster no longer has any fear of man.

A group of young High School girls are terrified when the monster interrupts their slumber party by rocking their mobile home and thrashing everything in sight.

The young ladies, again the actual victims, truly look terrified as they all try to load a shot-gun to protect themselves. Again another scene that was pulled off flawlessly by Pierce.

The film comes to a climax with the story of two young families that move into a house that is located near Boggy Creek together.

When the husbands go off to work the night shift, their wives are harassed by the monster, who tries to break into the house.

The next day, two visiting relatives discover giant tracks on the edge of the creek while fishing.

Later that night the creature returns and attacks one of the women by grabbing her through an open window. When the two men return from work, they find their families in a state of panic.

Armed with shot-guns, the men go out to find the monster. They mange to shot the creature several times. Believing that they have killed the beast they head for home. On the way back to the house one of the men is attacked by the creature, suffering several gashes and head trauma.

The family promptly rushes him to the hospital and moves out of the house the next morning.

Pierce's amateur monster movie would gross over 20 million at the box office. That may not seem like much compared to today's numbers, but to put it in perspective Fox's "Escape From The Planet Of The Apes" grossed only 12 million the year before.

In fact, the film was such a hit it spawned two sequels, "Return to Boggy Creek" in 1977 and "The Barbaric Beast of Boggy Creek, Part II". "Return" was not produced by Pierce and was a purely fictitious tale about a group of people who get lost in the swamp and are rescued by the monster.
